Abstract This paper provides a comprehensive review on microplastic from source to sink and reviews the current state of knowledge topic by focusing articles published within last five years identification, quantification, analyses, effects microplastics soil aqueous environments. Microplastics are materials formed either degradation plastic into smaller micro sized particles or obtained directly in daily products such as cosmetics, toothpastes, domestic cleaning products, etc. Hence, origin is primary secondary source. The lack information research conducted compared water influenced many disparities. These include variations defining conclusive methodologies analysis which therefore lead gaps identification comprehension pollution soil. effect different aquatic vertebrates, mammals, humans studied and, most cases, various negative were observed organism’s physiology. In addition innovative control methods, there growing focus exploring bioplastics potential substitute for traditional plastics. Numerous studies suggest that environmental impact more manageable with production use bioplastics. Nonetheless, additional needed confirm viability solution. Graphical abstract

Microplastics (MPs) are polymeric particles, mainly fossil-based, widely found in marine ecosystems, linked to environmental and public health impacts due their persistence ability carry pollutants. In São Paulo’s northern coast, geomorphological factors anthropogenic activities intensify the deposition of these Through multivariate techniques, this study aims investigate role morphometrical parameters as independent variables quantifying distribution MPs on region’s sandy beaches. Using beach face slope (tanβ) orientation (Aspect) derived from remote sensing images, calibrated by situ topographic profiles collected through GNSS positioning, laboratory analyses, six machine learning models Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, Lasso Ridge regression, Support Vector Regression, Partial Least Squares regression were tested evaluated for performance. The Boosting model demonstrated best performance, indicating its superior capacity capture complex relationships between predictor deposition, followed Forest model. Morphometric analysis revealed, once again, that coastal section Paulo, beaches with Sloping oriented toward SSW more susceptible accumulation, especially near urban centers. Ultimately, incorporating into predictive enhances understanding providing a foundation policies focused pollution mitigation ecosystem conservation while also contributing achieve SDG 14.

While the concept of microplastic (<5 mm) is well-established, emergence nanoplastics (<1000 nm) as a new contaminant presents recent and evolving challenge. The field nanoplastic research remains in its early stages, progress contingent upon development reliable practical analytical methods, which are currently lacking. This review aims to address intricacies analysis by providing comprehensive overview on application advanced imaging techniques, with particular focus Raman imaging, for identification simultaneous visualisation towards quantification. Although via hyper spectrum potentially powerful tool analyse nanoplastics, several challenges should be overcome. first challenge lies weak signal nanoplastics. To this, effective sample preparation enhancement techniques can implemented, such analysing that contains hundred-to-thousand spectrum, rather than single spectrum. Second complexity hyperspectral matrix dataset size at megabyte (MB) or even bigger, adopted using different algorithms ranging from image merging multivariate chemometrics. Third laser hinders small due diffraction (λ/2NA, ∼300 nm), solved involving use super-resolution. Signal processing, colour off-setting, Gaussian fitting (via deconvolution), re-focus re-construction, reviewed herein, show great promise breaking through limit. Overall, current studies along further validation imperative refine these approaches enhance reliability, not only but also broader investigations realm nanomaterials.

The soil microplastics pollution problem is becoming more and urgent every year. PVC a widely used material, consequently it possible that are significant contributor to pollution, especially in industrial soils. At the same time, usually contains many different chemical additives have ability migrate surface during aging. This review devoted summarizing results of studies on prevalence, ecotoxicological effects, features analytical process for detection microplastics. There evidence adversely affect ecosystem by leaching harmful substances with aging, affecting some animals, plants, microbial communities, enzymatic activity biogeochemical cycles. However, there insufficient data this issue further research needed. approaches analytics steps containing microplastics, its as well complexity matrix, must be taken into account when selecting protocol. It necessary strive standardization protocol comparable data.
