Seahorses ( Hippocampus spp.; Family Syngnathidae) are mainly targeted by Traditional Chinese Medicine, curio and ornamental trade, as dried or live specimens. Traceability tools may help fill the gaps on supply chains, securing information geographic origin identification of traded Fin-clipping, a non-lethal well-established method in seahorse research, offers potential approach to trace certify aquaculture these flagship species. As such, this study aimed investigate existence differences isotopic profiles four species cultured at research centers located southern Portugal northern Spain, well between guttulatus sourced from two centers, wild specimens This also evaluated combining elemental fingerprints for discrimination, through inductively continuous-flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IR-MS) plasma (ICP-MS). Species same exhibited similar stable composition (δ 13 C δ 15 N), except case temperate H. which differed significantly tropical kuda reidi . These could be due phylogenetic dissimilarities seawater temperature. The N allowed discriminate While dorsal fin isotopes alone did not prove reliable tool discrimination different species, them with seahorses’ whole-body successfully preliminary demonstrates analyses tracing identification. However, further should performed validate findings specimens, particularly those illegal, unreported unregulated (IUU) fisheries trade.

The commercial demand for small pelagic fish, such as Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias), renders them susceptible to provenance fraud. Scomber colias specimens intestinal tract bacteriome from five distinct fishing areas along the Portuguese coastline were analyzed by 4th-generation sequencing. Bacteria diversity indices and differential abundance revealed dissimilarities in operational taxonomic unit (OTU) among sites. Random forest-based model yielded an 85% accuracy rate attributing sample based on OTU relative abundance. Further refinement of microbial features using Indicator Species Analysis, Linear Discriminant Analysis Effect Size (LEfSe) Gini scores enabled identification 3-5 bacterial location biomarkers per site. sequences linked pathogenic bacteria, particularly Center-North Center-South areas. While this doesn't imply active pathogens, it highlights potential public health concerns complements efforts improve seafood microbiological quality traceability.

The high demand and economic relevance of cephalopods make them prone to food fraud, including related harvest location. Therefore, there is a growing need develop tools unequivocally confirm their capture Cephalopod beaks are nonedible, making this material ideal for traceability studies as it can also be removed without loss commodity value. Within context, common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) specimens were captured in five fishing areas along the Portuguese coast. Untargeted multi-elemental total X-ray fluorescence analysis revealed abundance Ca, Cl, K, Na, S, P, concomitant with keratin calcium phosphate nature material. We tested suite discrimination models on both elemental spectral data, where elements contributing most discriminate location typically associated diet (As), human-related pressures (Zn, Se, Mn), or geological features (P, Mn, Zn). Among six different chemometrics approaches used classify individuals according beaks' element concentration, classification trees attained accuracy 76.7%, whilst reducing number explanatory variables sample highlighting variable importance group discrimination. However, using further improved accuracy, highest 87.3% found partial least-squares discriminant analysis. Ultimately, analyses nonedible structures such provide an important, complementary, easily accessible means support seafood provenance traceability, integrating anthropogenic and/or gradients.
