Microplastics are a big and growing part of global pollution, which has aroused increasing concern in recent years because their large amount, wide distribution, adverse effects. can sorb various pollutants from aquatic environments act as vectors pollutants. Most studies mainly focused on the virgin microplastics. However, microplastics be easily colonized by microorganisms, form biofilm, will influence behaviors potential risks The formation biofilm its effects properties have been studied before, but sorption transport behaviors, for pollutants' transfer not reviewed. In this paper, role biofilm-developed was thoroughly analyzed summarized. First, microplastics, compositions microorganisms influencing factors, property changes after attachment Second, onto is discussed. Third, vector analyzed. We concluded that could provide unique substrates microorganisms. Biofilm-developed more than ones, then to introduce attached organisms.

Microplastics (MPs), tiny particles broken down from larger pieces of plastics, have accumulated everywhere on the earth. As an inert carbon stream in aquatic environment, they been reported as carriers for heavy metals and exhibit diverse interactive effects. However, these interactions are still poorly understood, especially mechanisms driving how pose risks living organisms. In this mini review, a bibliometric analysis field was conducted then were examined, emphasizing important roles microorganisms interactions. Their combined toxic effects potential hazards to human health also discussed. Finally, future research directions suggested. This review summarized recent progress highlighted essential microbes between MPs with hope promote more studies unveil action reduce/eliminate associated MP presence.

Microplastics (MPs) exposed to the natural environment provide an ideal surface for biofilm formation, which potentially acts as a reactive phase facilitating sorption of hazardous contaminants. Until now, changes in contaminant capacity MPs due formation have not been quantified. This is first study that compared naturally aged, biofilm-covered microplastic fibers (BMFs) adsorb perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and lead (Pb) at environmentally relevant concentrations. Changes properties morphology aged (MF) were studied by area analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy. Results revealed MFs exhibited higher areas because biomass accumulation virgin samples followed order polypropylene>polyethylene>nylon>polyester. The concentrations adsorbed Pb PFOS 4–25% 20–85% varied among polymer types. increased adsorption was linked with altered hydrophobic/hydrophilic characteristics samples. Overall, present demonstrates biofilms play decisive role contaminant-plastic interactions significantly enhance vector potential toxic environmental We anticipate knowledge generated from this will help refine planetary risk assessment MPs.

Microplastics are widespread in freshwater environments, their biological effects and combined of other pollutants have attracted extensive attention. In this study, we investigated the adsorption properties heavy metals onto polystyrene (PS) microplastics as well bioavailability toxicity by hydroponic wheat seedlings experiment. Results showed that PS (0.5 µm, 100 mg/L) had no significant effect on growth, photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) content. However, could adsorb copper cadmium, with a predominantly chemisorption. The accumulation cadmium reduced presence microplastics, which meant toxic might be mitigated. Compared single treatments, combination increased chlorophyll content, enhanced photosynthesis ROS. These findings suggest mitigating cadmium.

Although the study of microplastics in aquatic environment incorporates a diversity research fields, it is still its infancy many aspects while comparable topics have been studied other disciplines for decades. In particular, extensive sedimentology can provide valuable insights to guide future research. To advance our understanding comparability natural sediments with microplastics, we take an interdisciplinary look at existing literature describing particle properties, transport processes, sampling techniques and ecotoxicology. In recent decades, much attention has been paid to microplastic pollution, and research on microplastics begun grow exponentially. However, still suffers from the lack of standardized protocols methods for investigation under laboratory conditions. Therefore, in this review, we summarize critically discuss results 715 studies published last five years provide recommendations future research. Analysis data revealed that majority particles used are manufactured spheres polystyrene ranging size 1 50 µm, half did not characterize used, a minority aged particles, investigated leaching chemicals microplastics, or natural as control. There is large discrepancy between those found environment, many suffer environmental relevance incomplete information used. We have summarized discussed these issues provided focusing (i) selection, (ii) characterization, (iii) test design microplastics.
