Under the banner of United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), governments, industry, and civil society organisations have supported many energy access projects since 2015. Notably, funding investments allotted to renewable are regarded not only provide 'energy for all' but also support delivery other SDGs related climate change, food security, health, poverty reduction, among others. With less than 10 years left meet SDG targets, it is timely take stock examine how provision driving development initiatives, impacting local communities, influencing governance processes. This paper offers a critical review analysis impact based on empirical work from eight country case studies across Africa, Asia, Latin America. It interrogates these contribute towards achieving sustainable goals, highlights challenges, then draws lessons research, policy, practice. To advance SDGs, recommends action in four areas: addressing rural-urban disparities, ensuring that linked outcomes, balancing top-down bottom-up agendas, appraising implications techno-economic factors.

Some advanced countries’ rapid population, economic growth, and energy consumption expansion contribute significantly to global CO2 emissions. And while developed countries have achieved 100% universal access electricity, mainly from non-renewable sources, many developing still lack it. This presents challenges opportunities for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 13 of generating all cleaner or low-carbon sources reduce emissions in combating climate change consequences. Renewable energies been widely acknowledged greatly advance this endeavour, resulting studies about 30 already with over 70% their national electricity mix RE. It has birthed a new paradigm an emerging field RE purposes, recently receiving much attention academia public discourse. The major challenge idea is that such feat requires more diverse approach. study emphasises need meet technical non-technical requirements working towards purposes. Therefore, our work introduces six methodological evaluation mechanisms (herein, identified as metrics) suitable existing future renewable analysis. then reviews modelling tools identify applicability review perspectives presented will be valuable common integrated methodology tool analysing full adoption regions best trade-offs, using performance indices not previously used. also help proper regional resources system planning projects installations, contributing sustainable development.
