In recent decades, much attention has been paid to microplastic pollution, and research on microplastics begun grow exponentially. However, still suffers from the lack of standardized protocols methods for investigation under laboratory conditions. Therefore, in this review, we summarize critically discuss results 715 studies published last five years provide recommendations future research. Analysis data revealed that majority particles used are manufactured spheres polystyrene ranging size 1 50 µm, half did not characterize used, a minority aged particles, investigated leaching chemicals microplastics, or natural as control. There is large discrepancy between those found environment, many suffer environmental relevance incomplete information used. We have summarized discussed these issues provided focusing (i) selection, (ii) characterization, (iii) test design microplastics.

Microplastic contamination in environmental matrices is posing new challenges for scientific community and general public across the globe. Wide-spectrum application of plastics various commercial products has increased production polymeric materials. Owing to poor recycling waste management practices, it expected that a large number microplastics will be generated which may transported into soil, water, air. Present study reports occurrence soil Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh first Central region India. Study found total 752.5±6.36 microplastic particles were present all 10 samples collected. The highest amount at any one site reported 180±13.44 particles/kg. varied size, shape, colour as well. Chemical composition analysis revealed belonged five different polymer classes viz. polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, acetate. Implications microplastics' presence studied area might lead nearby wetland (lake), national park, groundwater. Detailed studies are, therefore, required explore other their correlation with anthropogenic activities Indian region.
