Abstract Epiphytic bacteria constitute a vital component of aquatic ecosystems, pivotal in regulating elemental cycling. Despite their significance, the diversity and functions epiphytic bacterial communities adhering to various submerged macrophytes remain largely unexplored. In this study, we employed metagenomic approach investigate function associated with six macrophytes: Ceratophyllum demersum , Hydrilla verticillata Myriophyllum verticillatum Potamogeton lucens Stuckenia pectinata Najas marina . The results revealed that predominant species for each plant type included Pseudomonas spp., Microbacterium Stenotrophomonas rhizophila Multiple comparisons linear discriminant analysis effect size indicated significant divergence community composition among macrophytes, 0.3–1% uniquely identified. richness S. significantly differed from both C. H. although no differences were observed evenness. Functionally, notable variations relative abundances genes carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus cycling within on macrophyte hosts. Among these communities, exhibited enrichment related 3-hydroxypropionate bicycle nitrogen assimilation, translocation, denitrification. Conversely, M. showcased linked reductive citric acid cycle (Arnon-Buchanan cycle), pentose phosphate (Calvin polyphosphate degradation, organic metabolism. summary, our findings offer valuable insights into leaves, shedding light roles lake ecosystems.

The hyperarid core of the Atacama Desert represents one most intense environments on Earth, often being used as an analog for Mars regolith. area is characterized by extremes in climate (e.g., temperature, humidity, UV irradiation) and edaphic factors hyper-salinity, high pH, compaction, perchlorates, low moisture, phosphorus organic matter). However, halophytic C4 plant Distichlis spicata appears to be few species planet that can thrive this environment. Within habitat it captures windblown sand leading formation unique structures generation above-ground phyllosphere soil. Using a combination approaches X-ray Computed Tomography, TXRF, δ13C/δ15N isotope profiling, microbial PLFAs, 14C turnover, phosphate sorption isotherms) we examined regulating biogeochemical cycling nitrogen (N), (P) carbon (C) both vegetated unvegetated areas. Our results showed D. rhizomes with large aerenchyma were able break through highly cemented topsoil layer root proliferation underlying presence roots increased soil water content, P availability induced change community structure promoted growth activity. Due levels nitrate (>2 t ha−1) rates sorption/precipitation, our data suggest activity P, but not N limited. This study presented a comprehensive analysis of the microbial ecology in water diversion rivers (WDRs) source area East Route South-to-North Water Diversion Project (ER-SNWDP) China across various periods. Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteriota, and Bacteroidota were identified as dominant phyla river sediment. During wet period, communities exhibited highest richness, biodiversity, most intense antagonistic relationships compared to those dry normal Generally, network predominantly existed symbiotic models characterized by mutual benefit symbiosis throughout all co-occurrence was found be complex, with OTUs showing closest interconnections. The mechanisms governing community diversity, succession, biogeography spatial turnover species stochastic processes. A more pronounced impact processes on assemblages observed during or periods than period. Functional prediction metabolic pathways indicated that main ecological functions encompassed carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid energy etc. could provide essential scientific data for regulation, protection, resources management WDRs.

Particular frost patterns on natural leaves had prompted Yao et al. [Y. al ., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 117 , 6323–6329 (2020)] to investigate the underlying physics. Their work revealed why corrugated surfaces ice forms crests and dries out adjacent grooves. In absence of frost, in contrast, grooves tend constitute niches a leaf where microorganisms are less limited by moisture than other locations. Here, we show that able nucleate before it can modify frosting pattern their advantage. This ability might drive cold arid environments association between certain plants.

Inter-basin water transfer projects, such as the Yellow River to Qingdao Water Diversion Project (YQWD), are essential for addressing scarcity, but impact local aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates seasonal characteristics of eukaryotic microbial communities in Jihongtan Reservoir, main water-receiving body YQWD, over a one-year period using 18S rDNA amplicon sequencing. The results showed that diversity did not exhibit significant variation (
