Decarbonization of economy is intended to reduce the consumption non-renewable energy sources and emissions from them. One major components decarbonization are "green energy" technologies, e.g. wind turbines electric vehicles. However, they themselves create new sustainability challenges, use green contributes reduction fossil fuels, on one hand, but at same time it increases demand for permanent magnets containing considerable amounts rare earth elements (REEs). This article provides first global analysis environmental impact using in technologies. The was performed applying system dynamics modelling methodology integrated with life cycle assessment geometallurgical approach. We provide evidence that an increase by 1% production causes a depletion REEs reserves 0.18% GHG exploitation phase 0.90%. Our results demonstrate between 2010 2020, has resulted cumulatively 32 billion tonnes CO2-equivalent globally. It shows approaches still needed, order ensure process. finding highlights need design implement various measures reuse, recycling (currently below 1%), limit their dematerialization, substitution develop elimination Such would support development appropriate strategies environmentally sustainable
