Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising alternative compounds that enable the development of technologies based on their unique properties as solvents or catalysts. These require integrated product and process designs to select ILs with optimal performances at an industrial scale promote cost-effective sustainable technologies. The digital era multiscale research methodologies have changed paradigm from experiment-oriented hybrid experimental–computational developments guided by engineering. This Review summarizes relevant contributions (>300 papers) simulations advance IL-based technology guiding experimental efforts enhancing transferability.
