Few studies have examined evaluation in formative settings medical education, but none among graduate anatomy students. This exploratory study investigated the impact of versus quiz-based assessments on students' stress, motivation, perceived learning quality an course. Nine students were interviewed discern perceptions different types. Four instructors establish philosophies behind their chosen style, responses compared Inductive thematic analyses student interviews yielded multiple themes regarding considerations for influence academic-related anxiety motivation: (1) communicating clear goals expectations, (2) instructor approachability individualized assessment, (3) alignment between effort outcomes. Faculty interviewees demonstrated intentions promote non-technical skills, provide authentic experiences, emphasize assessment. However, there was some misalignment instructors' exacerbating reducing motivation.
