Abstract The etiologic pathways leading to neuropsychiatric diseases remain poorly defined. As genomic technologies have advanced over the past several decades, considerable progress has been made linking disorders genetic underpinnings. Interest and consideration of nongenetic risk factors (e.g., lead exposure schizophrenia) have, in contrast, lagged behind heritable frameworks explanation. Thus, association illness environmental chemical exposure, their potential interactions with susceptibility, are largely unexplored. In this review, we describe emerging approaches for considering impact acting alone concert risk, point role epigenetics mediating effects on transcription genes implicated mental disorders. We highlight recent examples research psychiatric that shared biological mechanisms—synaptic dysfunction, immune alterations, gut–brain interactions. outline new tools resources can be harnessed study These tools, combined experimental evidence, suggest there is a need broadly incorporate exposures research, ultimate goal identifying modifiable informing treatment strategies disease.

Abstract Our recent study has shown that prenatal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) altered the expression of genes associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, we further investigated effects BPA on ASD-related known regulate neuronal viability, neuritogenesis, and learning/memory, assessed these functions in offspring exposed pregnant rats. We found increased neurite length, number primary neurites, branches, but reduced size hippocampal cell body both sexes offspring. However, utero decreased viability density hippocampus impaired learning/memory only male while females were not affected. Interestingly, several (e.g. Mief2 , Eif3h Cux1 Atp8a1 ) dysregulated showed a sex-specific correlation and/or learning/memory. The findings from suggest disrupts involved sex-dependent manner, may play an important role risk higher prevalence ASD males subjected exposure.
