Evidence suggests affective disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder are characterised by dysregulated autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. These findings suggest ANS dysregulation may be involved in the pathogenesis of disorders. Different states different activity patterns (i.e., an increase or decrease sympathetic parasympathetic activity). To understand how abnormalities development disorders, it is important to correlate with before their onset. Using heart rate variability (HRV) a tool measure activity, this review aimed look at associations between HRV non-clinical populations those without medical psychiatric disorders). Heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback has a beneficial impact on perceived stress and emotion regulation. However, its brain function is still unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of an 8-week HRV-biofeedback intervention functional connectivity in healthy subjects.HRV was carried out five sessions per week, including four at home one our lab. A control group played jump'n'run games instead training. Functional magnetic resonance imaging conducted before after both groups. Neurodegenerative diseases, which frequently present with neuropsychiatric symptoms related to prefrontal cortical dysfunction, can alter the integrity of neural networks involved in central autonomic nervous system regulation, is proposed be indexed by heart rate variability (HRV). We systematically reviewed characteristics, methodology and outcomes 27 studies HRV relation measures cognition behavior neurodegenerative conditions, assessed strength this relationship, cross-sectionally, across 18 studies. A significant, moderate effect was observed (r = 0.25), such that higher better cognitive behavioral scores, not influenced mean age or status. There no evidence small-study effects but we could rule out publication bias, other factors may have contributed heterogeneity between Our findings support proposal a marker self-regulatory processes further research on association needed alongside neuroimaging methods.

Abstract Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques such as transcranial magnetic and direct current are widely used to test the involvement of specific cortical regions in various domains cognition emotion. Despite capability causal directions, this approach has been only sparsely examine regulation autonomic nervous system (ANS) functions heart rate (HR) variability (HRV) models regard. In preregistered (PROSPERO) systematic review meta‐analysis, we aimed investigate, based on meta‐regression, whether NIBS represents an effective method for modulating HR HRV measures, evaluate ANS is modulated by mechanisms affected NIBS. Here have adhered PRISMA guidelines. a series four meta‐analyses, total 131 effect sizes from 35 sham‐controlled trials were analyzed using robust variance estimation random‐effects meta‐regression technique. was found effectively modulate with small medium sizes. Moderator analyses yielded significant differences effects between distinct areas. Our results show that promising tool investigate ANS, which may add existing imaging animal study literature. Future research needed identify further factors size effects. As many studies reviewed be at high risk bias, recommend methods reduce potential bias design conduct future studies.

Cardiorespiratory signals have long been treated as "noise" in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) research, with the goal of minimizing their impact to isolate neural activity. However, there is a growing recognition that these signals, once seen confounding variables, provide valuable insights into brain function and overall health. This shift reflects dynamic interaction between cardiovascular, respiratory, systems, which together support In this review, we explore role cardiorespiratory dynamics-such heart rate variability (HRV), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), changes blood flow, oxygenation, carbon dioxide levels-embedded within fMRI signals. These physiological reflect critical aspects neurovascular coupling are influenced by factors such stress, breathing patterns, age-related changes. We also discuss complexities distinguishing from neuronal activity data, given significant contribution signal interactions cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Recognizing influence dynamics crucial for improving interpretation shedding light on heart-brain respiratory-brain connections, enhancing our understanding circulation, oxygen delivery, waste elimination brain.
