Abstract
Understanding

Significance
The
basal
forebrain
(BF)
is
traditionally
recognized
as
a
brain
structure
crucial
for
arousal,
attention,
learning,
and
memory.
Here,
we
discovered
causal
role
of
the
BF
in
control
prosocial
behavior,
which
fundamental
our
daily
life.
We
showed
mice
that
somatostatin-expressing
inhibitory
neurons
predominantly
target
GABA
disinhibit
dopamine
ventral
tegmental
area
thereby
increase
release
nucleus
accumbens.
This
disinhibitory
circuitry
played
an
essential
promoting
social
interaction
behavior.
Our
findings
identify
previously
unknown
function
behavior
regulation
suggest
potential
therapeutic
deficits
commonly
observed
major
neuropsychiatric
disorders.
