Human experience is imbued by the sense of being an embodied agent. The investigation such basic self-consciousness has been hampered difficulty comprehensively modulating it in laboratory while reliably capturing ensuing subjective changes. present preregistered study fills this gap combining advanced meditative states with principled phenomenological interviews: 46 long-term meditators (19 female, 27 male) were instructed to modulate and attenuate their self-experience during magnetoencephalographic monitoring. Results showed frequency-specific (high-beta band) activity reductions frontoparietal posterior medial cortices (PMC). Importantly, PMC driven a subgroup describing radical self-disruptions, including suspension agency dissolution localized first-person perspective. Neural changes correlated lifetime meditation interview-derived experiential changes, but not classical self-reports. results demonstrate potential integrating in-depth methods into neuroscientific experiments. Furthermore, they highlight neural oscillations as central process supporting self.

Previous studies indicate vitamin D impacts autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but its relationship with brain function is unclear. This study investigated the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin [25(OH)D] levels and in preschool children ASD using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), explored correlations clinical symptoms. A total of 226 patients underwent rs-fMRI scanning 25(OH)D testing. Clinical symptoms were assessed Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) Behavior Checklist (ABC). Patients categorized into mild severe groups based on CARS, further divided normal (NVD), insufficient (VDI), deficient (VDD) levels. Changes among these analyzed regional homogeneity (ReHo), ABC scores used for correlation analysis. In ASD, ReHo increased right postcentral gyrus left precuneus VDI VDD compared to NVD, decreased bilateral middle cingulate superior frontal group VDI. occipital insula Correlation analysis revealed that was positively correlated body object use NVD groups, while negatively relating groups. language lower show multiple abnormalities, specific region alterations linked symptom severity. These findings enhance our understanding D's impact suggest future research may explore therapeutic potential.

Interoception, the neural sensing of visceral signals, and interoceptive awareness (IA), conscious perception interoception, are crucial for life survival functions mental health. Resilience, capacity to overcome adversity, has been associated with reduced disturbances. Here, we sought evidence our Insula Modular Active Control (IMAC) model that suggest insula, a brain region specialized in processing information, realizes IA contributes resilience health via cortico-subcortical connections.

How subjective experience (i.e., consciousness) arises out of objective material processes has been called the hard problem. The neuroscience consciousness set to find sufficient conditions for and theoretical empirical endeavours have placed a particular focus on cortex subcortex, whilst discounting cerebellum. However, when looking at neuroimaging research, it becomes clear there is substantial evidence that cerebellar, cortical, subcortical functions are correlated with consciousness. Neurostimulation suggests alterations in any part brain may provoke experience, but most extreme changes provoked via subcortex. I then evaluate neuropsychological abnormality experience; only damage oldest regions seem completely obliterate experience. Finally, review congenital experimental decorticate cases, behavioural compatible absence cortex. evidence, taken together, indicates body, subcortex environment likely behaviours suggest basic experiences. emphasise both importance individual’s developmental trajectory interdependencies between different neural systems.

Art therapy (AT) has been proposed as a treatment for post-traumatic conditions, potentially by providing somatic sensory input that can (i) enhance the client’s sense of self and embodiment, (ii) modulate arousal, (iii) aid in rethinking reframing traumatic memories. However, evidence supporting AT dissociative disorders remains limited. The theoretical basis efficacy is discussed relation to findings regarding traumatized person’s brain mindset, well its altered functional network connectivity. It crucial consider specific alterations networks associated with trauma, particularly those occurring deep regions, which include midbrain, brainstem, cerebellum. hypothesis suggests early or severe trauma impair brain’s higher regulatory functions, explained cascade theory.
