Spiking activity along synaptic circuits linking primary somatosensory (S1) and motor (M1) areas is fundamental for sensorimotor integration in cortex. Circuits the ascending pathway through mouse hand/forelimb S1 M1 were recently described detail (Yamawaki et al., 2021). Here, we characterize peripherally evoked spiking dynamics these two cortical areas. Theories of consciousness grounded in neuroscience must explain the phenomenal binding problem, e.g., how micro-units information are combined to create macro-scale conscious experience common human phenomenology. An example is single ‘pixels’ a visual scene experienced as holistic image ‘mind’s eye’, rather than individual, separate, and massively parallel experiences, corresponding perhaps individual neuron activations, neural ensembles, or foveal saccades, any which could conceivably deliver identical functionality from an processing point view. There multiple contested candidate solutions problem. This paper explores metaphysical infrastructure Integrated Information Theory (IIT) v4.0 can provide distinctive solution. The solution—that particular entities aggregable units (‘complexes’) define existence—might work static picture, but introduces issues dynamic system. We ask what happens our self main complex moves around biological network. Our account developing through time leads apparent dilemma for IIT theorists between non-local entity transitions contiguous selves: ‘dynamic evolution problem’. As well specifying dilemma, we describe three ways might dissolve before it gains traction. Detecting salient stimuli in a visual scene is crucial for animal survival, yet how the brain encodes saliency remains unclear. Here, using two-photon calcium imaging, we reveal preference-independent map superficial superior colliculus of awake mice. Salient evoke stronger responses than uniform both excitatory and inhibitory neurons, with similar encoding patterns across cell types. The strongest response occurs when stimulus centered within receptive field, contextual effects extending approximately 40°. Response amplitude scales strength but independent neurons' orientation or motion direction preferences. Notably, saliency-encoding neurons exhibit weak selectivity, indicating complementary relationship between feature maps. Importantly, this does not require cortical inputs. These findings provide insights into neural mechanisms underlying detection.

Abstract Artificial neural pathway (ANP) implants hold transformative potential for empowering individuals with disabilities, which has recently revolutionized the clinical treatment of spinal cord injury through epidural electrical stimulation (EES). Classical EES operates a pre-set program and needs manual modification, consuming both manpower time. Although existed studies proposed kinematic image processing to configurate or brain-spine interface control motions automatically, prompt tuning on motor modulation in an open environment is still inaccessible. Here, we show wireless self-fine-tuning ANP implant establish rapid self-feedback mechanism appropriate free activities achieve precise by EES.
