Short food supply chains and circularity are discussed as key factors for a sustainable system. Although self-sufficiency ratios (SSR) often used to characterize agri-food systems, the concept of SSR remains inconsistently defined, particularly when means production such livestock feed explicitly considered. We present systematic conceptualization SSR, i.e., ratio domestic consumption within region along three dimensions: a) products, b) cropland c) primary agricultural biomass. While refer net-trade resp. crop relates biomass representing embodied in consumed products. As such, third dimension indicates potential assuming products stem from livestock, fed with crops grass. quantify these dimensions 226 regions (NUTS2) European Union (EU) based on detailed statistics models. Results show that 14 % EU were self-sufficient, 26 import-dependent all dimensions. find 54 self-sufficient ruminant 39 monogastric underlining spatially concentrated pork, egg, poultry structure EU. Expanding narrow understanding by integrating perspective allows more nuanced debate systems. The results, first, demonstrate substantial role regional and, second, indicate room stronger circular integration crop-

Food production for human consumption is a leading cause of environmental damage in the world and yet over two billion people suffer from malnutrition. Several studies have presented evidence that changes dietary patterns across can lead to win-win outcomes social sustainability complement ongoing technological policy efforts improve efficiency agricultural production. However, existing been compiled “silos” by large range researchers several disciplines using different indicators. Microalgae can produce biostimulants in form of phytohormones, which are compounds that, even if applied low concentrations, have stimulant effects on plants growth and enhance their quality resistance to stress. Considering that microalgal biomass grow recovering nutrients from wastewater, this circular approach allows use residues for the production high added value (such as phytohormones) at cost. The interest microalgae recently raised. Scientists focused direct application these cellular extracts plants, while number studies identification bioactive molecules, such is very scarce. Two cyanobacteria strains (Synechocystis sp. Driven by a growing and more affluent population, changing diets lifestyles, the demand for livestock products is expected to surge in next decades. Satisfying this will result additional pressures on land systems. The increasingly globalized supply chains of economy further decouple many these impacts from places where are reared. In study, we determined impact intensities global production across three environmental indicators: deforestation, biodiversity loss marine eutrophication. To end, used data crops (and grass), their trade use as feed livestock-production systems, well data. We found highest deforestation tropics Central South America, Southeast Asia Western Africa. contrast, values eutrophication were countries located Northern Europe East Asia. Our analyses show differences caused varying efficiencies systems sourcing patterns items. grazing ruminant meat, example, resulting dominated consumption grass. intensive industrialized bulk and, lesser extent, linked imported soybean feed. results can help identify that would qualify priority action targets, potential entry points make sustainable. Abstract Food trade is generally perceived to increase the availability and diversity of foods available consumers, but there little empirical evidence on its implications for human health. Here we show that a substantial proportion dietary risks diet-related mortality worldwide attributable international food whether contributions are positive or negative depends types traded. Using bilateral data 2019 food-specific risk–disease relationships, estimate imports fruits, vegetables, legumes nuts improved in importing countries were associated with reduction from non-communicable diseases ~1.4 million deaths globally. By contrast, red meat aggravated an ~150,000 deaths. The magnitude our findings suggests considering impacts will become important aspect health-sensitive agriculture policies, policy responses disruptions chains.
