Abstract The global amount of solid waste has dramatically increased as a result rapid population growth, accelerated urbanization, agricultural demand, and industrial development. world's is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, while production will 2.59 tons. This deteriorate the already strained environment climate situation. Consequently, there an urgent need for methods recycle waste. Here, we review recent technologies treat waste, assess economic feasibility transforming into energy. We focus on municipal, agricultural, found that methane captured from landfilled-municipal in Delhi could supply 8–18 million houses with electricity generate 7140 gigawatt-hour, prospected potential 31,346 77,748 gigawatt-hour 2030 2060, respectively. Valorization food anaerobic digestion systems replace 61.46% natural gas 38.54% coal use United Kingdom, reduce land 1.8 hectares if provided animal feeds. also estimated levelized cost landfill waste-to-energy $0.04/kilowatt-hour $0.07/kilowatt-hour, payback time 0.73–1.86 years 1.17–2.37 years, Nonetheless, current treatment are still inefficient, particular treating containing over 60% water.

Anaerobic Digestion (AD) technology emerges as a viable solution for managing municipal organic waste, offering pollution reduction and the generation of biogas fertilisers. This study reviews research works advancements in AD implementation to effectively impact UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Furthermore, critically analyses responsible waste management that contributes health safety, elevating quality life both rural urban areas and, finally, creates map outputs onto all 17 SDGs. Finally, assessment employs three sustainability pillars (i.e., economic, environmental, social perspectives) examine direct indirect links between The findings reveal substantial progress, such poverty through job creation, bolstering economic growth (SDGs 1, 8, 10, 12), enhancing agricultural productivity (SDG 2), advancing renewable energy usage diminishing reliance on fossil fuels 7), fostering inclusive education gender equality 4, 5, 9), combating climate change 13), transforming cities into sustainable harmonious environments 11, 16, 17), curbing environmental 3, 6, 12, 14, 15). Nonetheless, highlights need further efforts achieve SDG targets, particularly part liquid solid fertilisers outputs.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are high-value biodegradable polyesters with thermoplastic properties used in the manufacturing of different products such as packaging films. PHAs have gained much attention from researchers and industry because their biobased nature appropriate features, similar to conventional synthetic plastics. This review aims discuss some recent solutions challenges associated PHA production. The implementation a cost-effective process is presented by following strategies, use inexpensive carbon sources, selection high-producing microorganisms, functionalization final materials make them suitable for food applications, among others. Research efforts needed improve economic viability production at large scale. Haloferax mediterranei promising producer due its ability grow non-sterile conditions possibility using seawater prepare growth medium. Additionally, downstream processing extraction can be simplified treating H. cells pure water. Further research should focus on optimization recycling effluents side streams reutilization desalinization an integrated part biotechnological
