Discharging large amounts of domestic and industrial wastewater drastically increases the reactive nitrogen content in aquatic ecosystems, which causes severe ecological stress biodiversity loss. This paper reviews three common types denitrification processes, including physical, chemical, biological mainly focuses on membrane technology for recovery. The applicable conditions effects various treatment methods, as well advantages, disadvantages, influencing factors technologies, are summarized. The electrodialysis (ED) is widely applied as a reliable low-energy process in which ions are transferred through selective ion-exchange membranes. purpose of this study to confirm the efficiency ED system for removing nutrient contained side-stream actual wastewater and identify propensity ion exchange membrane fouling by dissolved organic matter micropollutants side-stream. As result constant-voltage 7 batch operation side-stream, 92.1 % ammonium 52.4 phosphate were removed, it was confirmed that particularly effective ammonium. solutes compared measuring elemental analysis FTIR spectra three types membranes: original, fouled, cleaned. It low-molecular-weight an important cause fouling, SEM-EDS showed acid-base cleaning foulants. Among remaining micropollutants, diclofenac, gemfibrozil, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen can be removed according their ionic characteristics, but some diclofenac gemfibrozil presumed adsorbed on due hydrophobicity.
