Intersex (specifically, testicular oocytes) has been observed in male smallmouth bass (SMB; Micropterus dolomieu) and other centrarchids the South Branch of Potomac River, U.S.A., forks Shenandoah during past five years. This condition often is associated with exposure to estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals some fish species, but such their sources have yet be identified Potomac. In an attempt better understand plausible causes this condition, we investigated reproductive health sampled up- downstream wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent point on River Maryland, U.S.A. Smallmouth were from Conococheague Creek Monocacy largemouth (LMB; salmoides) collected near Blue Plains WWTP mainstem River. Chemical analyses compounds captured passive samplers at these locations also conducted. A high prevalence intersex (82-100%) was SMB all sites regardless collection area. lower (23%) LMB site. When compared, significant differences noted only Conococheague. Differences included factor, gonadosomatic index, plasma vitellogenin concentration, estrogen testosterone ratio. general, effluent, storm-water runoff, agriculture more prevalent sampling sites. An exception atrazine its metabolites, which present greater concentrations upstream It appears that proximity WWTPs may influence watershed, inputs likely contribute widespread, incidence oocytes.

Abstract Because of persistent organic pollution in aquatic environments, the widely used organochlorine pesticide endosulfan, which is a potential endocrine disruptor, expected to pose significant risk organisms. In present study, we explored endocrine‐disrupting β‐endosulfan by investigating its effect on growth, reproduction, plasma vitellogenin, and organ histology adult zebrafish. We found that, although did not significantly affect growth zebrafish, it greatly decreased hatching rate, even at concentration as low 10 ng/L. Interestingly, decrease rate was highly correlated with pathological alterations testes. Additionally, values gonadosomatic index were reduced female zebrafish treated 200 ng/L β‐endosulfan, also closely associated ovarian histological changes. More importantly, increase level vitellogenin observed all male fish β‐endosulfan. Based these findings, conclude that severely affects reproductive function synthesis liver, thus, has serious disruption Environ. Toxicol. Chem. 2011;30:2525–2531. © 2011 SETAC
