Global concerns towards potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are steadily increasing due to the significant threats that PTEs pose human health and environmental quality. This calls for immediate, effective efficient remediation solutions. Earthworms, 'ecosystem engineers', can modify improve soil enhance plant productivity. Recently, considerable attention has been paid potential of earthworms, alone or combined with other organisms and/or amendments, remediate contaminated soils. However, use earthworms in (i.e., vermiremediation) not thoroughly reviewed date. Therefore, this review discusses provides comprehensive insights into suitability as candidates bioremediation soils mitigating risks. Specifically, we discussed: i) occurrence abundance soils; ii) influence on earthworm communities iii) factors affecting accumulation elimination, iv) dynamics fate amended The technical feasibility, knowledge gaps, practical challenges have worked out critically discussed. could provide a reference guidance bio-restoration shall also help developing innovative applicable solutions controlling bioavailability mitigation environment

Antibiotics could enter farmlands through sewage irrigation or manure application, causing combined pollution with pesticides. may affect the environmental fate of pesticides and even increase their bioavailability. In this study, influence monensin on degradation, toxicity, availability atrazine in soil-earthworm microcosms was investigated. Monensin inhibited degradation atrazine, changed metabolite patterns soil, increased bioavailability earthworms. Atrazine had a significant synergistic effect earthworms acute toxic test. long-term toxicity tests, co-exposure also led to worse effects including oxidative stress, energy metabolism disruption, cocoon production compared single exposure. The expression tight junction proteins down-regulated significantly by monensin, indicating that intestinal barrier weakened, possibly atrazine. expressions heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) reproductive ontogenetic factors (ANN, TCTP) were all downregulated binary exposure, resilience further weakened under pollution. disturbed These results showed risks agricultural areas.

Earthworms are important soil organisms, contributing to many beneficial ecological services that can be harmed by heavy metal contamination. Because of their permeable skin and constant contact with through digestive tract, they extremely sensitive Heavy metals get bioaccumulated in bodies cause major health problems. In this review, we describe the findings various studies on toxicity earthworms, mechanisms toxicity, detoxification responses consequences environment. have deleterious impact earthworms at all levels organization, including inhibiting enzyme activities, causing DNA damage, reducing survival, growth cocoon production, altering behavior total earthworm community diversity biomass. These negative effects disproportionate adverse for stability as well serious entire terrestrial ecosystem. So, pollution poses a threat activity posing risk environment human health.

In recent years, soil pollution by massive accumulation of heavy metals (HMs), microplastics, and refractory hydrocarbon chemicals has become an emerging global concern, drawing worldwide attention. These pollutants influence diversity hindering the reproduction, abundance, thereby affecting aboveground productivity. The scientific community recently emphasized contribution earthworms to metal accumulation, microplastic degradation, decomposition organic matter in soil, which helps maintain structure. This review paper aimed compile facts on how cope with effect HMs, plant polyphenols so that vermiremediation could be widely applied for well-being ecosystem environmentalists. Earthworms have special surface-active metabolites their guts called drilodefensins help them defend themselves against oxidative action polyphenols. They also combat effects toxic other compounds elevating antioxidant activities enzymes converting into harmless or useful nutrients. Moreover, act as biofilters, bioindicators, bioaccumulators, transformers polyphenols, pollutant hydrocarbons. Microorganisms (fungi bacteria) earthworms' gut assist fixation, transformation these toxicants prevent effects. As a potential organism application ecotoxicology, it is recommended propagate agricultural fields; isolate, culture enormously industry, inoculate polluted abate toxicity minimizing health caused well enhance productivity crops.
