Abstract The global nitrogen cycle is of paramount significance as it affects important processes like primary productivity and decomposition. Nitrification, the oxidation ammonia to nitrate via nitrite, a key process in cycle. knowledge about nitrification has been challenged during last few decades with inventions anaerobic oxidation, ammonia‐oxidizing archaea, recently complete (comammox). discovery comammox Nitrospira made paradigm shift nitrification, before which was considered two‐step process, mediated by chemolithoautotrophic oxidizers nitrite oxidizers. genome equipped molecular machineries for both oxidation. genus ubiquitous, comes under phylum Nitrospirae, comprises six sublineages consisting canonical comammox. single‐step energetically more feasible; furthermore, existence diverse metabolic pathways critical its establishment various habitats. present review discusses taxonomy, ecophysiology, isolation, identification, growth, diversity ; compares genomes nitrite‐oxidizing , analyses differences other nitrifying bacteria.
