The social and environmental impacts of large dams are quantifiable have been well documented, while small often presumed to be less environmentally damaging than dams. purpose this study was analyze longitudinal gradients in environmental, hydrodynamic variables their impact on phytoplankton function, within a cascade four reservoirs (XuanMiaoGuan, XMG; TianFuMiao, TFM; XiBeiKou, XBK; ShangJiaHe, SJH) one reservoir bay (Huangbohe Bay, HBH), located from upstream downstream the Huangbo River, Hubei Province, China. Our results showed that water temperature, total nitrogen, soluble silicate increased along system, concentration dissolved oxygen phosphorus decreased. We identified 16 functional groups, predominant including D ( Synedra Stephanodiscus hantzschii ), E Dinobryon divergens Lo (Dinoflagellate: Peridinium bipes Peridiniopsis X2 Chroomona Y Cryptomonas changed longitudinally up down reservoirs. number dominant groups gradient, indicating function community more stable. Functional group among reservoirs, except SJH. HBH completely due backwater jacking main stream Yangtze River. Euphotic depth, suspended solids, nutrients were apparently key factors driving variations Notably, patterns we observed not all consistent with cascading continuum concept (CRCC) typically characterizes rivers. Thus, our findings contribute further theoretical development CRCC, which may apply widely systems.

Macroinvertebrate community composition in regulated rivers is highly dependent on high and low flow events. Significant reduction or augmentation of the downstream from a dam can lead to decrease variety sensitive macrozoobenthic taxa. Such decreases may degraded ecological status. In this research, was investigated river section multipurpose with strategic significance for northeast Bulgaria. Samples were collected five years Golyama Kamchia River, close proximity Ticha dam. Three sampling sites established longitudinal gradient, 75 1770 meters Sixteen invertebrate samples taken between 2017 2021. Double (spring autumn) conducted 2019. The goal find how macroinvertebrate communities are influenced by dam-induced modified environmental conditions, management dam, which parameters considered have strongest effect. Likewise study important understand recovery gradients application present “minimum acceptable – compensation flow” hydrologically differing years. main physicochemical measured alongside velocity water at each site. Additionally, maintained hydrological regime explored relationship several indices composition. analysis biological data through 7 showed that taxa (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera Trichoptera - EPT) very good indicators damming impact, detecting disturbances not so well differentiated other type-specific resulting order most group during study. 2020 base released dropped its lowest level (0.095 m3 s-1 0.552 s-1) an 10-year period hydrology. This event continued more than year led rupture previously observed gradient. Downstream second site, about 800 m below wall, number trichopteran families third 1.8 km they significantly reduced.
