Microplastics pose a significant environmental threat, with potential implications for toxic chemical release, aquatic life endangerment, and human food chain contamination. In Asia, rapid economic growth coupled inadequate waste management has escalated plastic pollution in rivers, positioning them as focal points concern. Despite Asia's rivers being considered the most polluted plastics globally, scholarly attention to microplastics region's freshwater environments is recent development. This study undertakes systematic review of 228 articles map microplastic hotspots Asian systems synthesize current research trends within continent. Findings reveal concentration China Japan, primarily investigating riverine surface waters through net-based sampling methods. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) emerge predominant types, frequently observed fibers or fragments. However, diversity methodologies reporting metrics complicates data synthesis, underscoring need standardized analytical frameworks facilitate comparative analysis. paper delineates distribution outlines prevailing challenges prospects contexts.

Abstract Tracing the sources of microplastics (MPs) across various environmental media is currently facing significant challenges due to their complex transportable features. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive identification MP in Beijing water bodies by combining diversity and conditional fragmentation model, thoroughly considering local multiple sources. The resemblance community compositions implied shared or similar rivers lakes, were assorted equivalent based on high MPs. model can act as proxy characteristics According suburban sewage, soils, dry wet deposition constituted MPs lakes Beijing. extremely abundance (520,000 items·m −3 ) sewage also confirmed it potential source. For with different polymer types morphologies, non-fibrous polypropylene (PP) was primarily controlled whereas contribution sludge fibrous polyethylene terephthalate (PET) notable. Our study provides insights for more accurate source apportionment contributes better understanding fate urban environment.

Southeast Asian countries are recognized as significant contributors to the discharge of abundant plastic waste into ocean. In this study, we conducted neuston net surveys on Si Chang Island Gulf Thailand, a coral reef conservation area, determine presence microplastic (MP) pollution. The survey, during wet (southwesterly monsoon), transition, and dry seasons (northeasterly revealed that MP abundance was in range 0.02–42.46 particles m−3. precipitation, wind, current direction induced by monsoons influenced distribution MP, presenting seasonality. cluster analysis for colors polymer types MPs suggested origin is diverse. Based our results, proposal generation, sources, pathways Thailand presented: 1) wastes exposed strong UV light season get fragmented around river, 2) heavy rains wash away season. This applicable tropical regions, including Thailand. Therefore, paper concluded ocean currents unique climate, resulting generation land, increase surrounding Asia countries. Furthermore, ecosystems can be particularly threatened these areas. So, an monitoring from world highly recommended.

Today, the scientific community is facing crucial challenges in delivering a healthier world for future generations. Among these, quest circular and sustainable approaches plastic recycling one of most demanding several reasons. Indeed, massive use materials over last century has generated large amounts long-lasting waste, which, much time, not been object adequate recovery disposal politics. Most this waste by packaging materials. Nevertheless, decade, new trend imposed environmental concerns brought topic under magnifying glass, as testified increasing number related publications. Several methods have proposed polymeric based on chemical or mechanical methods. A panorama promising studies to polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS) given within review.

Microplastics (MP) have recently been considered as emerging contaminants in the water environment. In last number of years, studies on MP has grown quickly due to increasing consciousness potential risks for human health related exposure. The present review article discusses scientific literature regarding occurrence and accumulation aquatic compartment (river, lake, wastewater, seafood), analytical methods used assess their concentration, fate transport humans, delineates urgent areas future research. To better analogize data we subdivided papers based sampling, methods, concentration units with aim help reader identify similarities differences research papers, thus making comparison easier individuation most relevant articles reader’s interests faster. Furthermore, argued about several ways highlighting some gaps reviewed publications. We suggest improving developing standardized protocols collect, process, analyze samples.
