The combined pollution of microplastics (MPs) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) often occurs in aquatic ecosystems, posing a serious threat to animal human health. However, little is known about the liver damage caused by single or co-exposure MPs SMZ, its specific mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this study, we investigated effects 20 μm 80 nm SMZ both larval adult zebrafish models. Firstly, observed significant decrease number hepatocytes worsened following MPs. Additionally, macrophages neutrophils decreased, while expression inflammatory cytokines antioxidant enzyme activities increased after zebrafish. Transcriptome analysis revealed changes gene co-exposed groups, particularly processes related oxidation-reduction, response, MAPK signaling pathway Co-exposure also promoted hepatocyte apoptosis inhibited proliferation levels, which was associated with translocation Nrf2 from cytoplasm nucleus an increase protein levels NF-kB p65 Furthermore, our pharmacological experiments demonstrated that inhibiting ROS blocking partially rescued injury induced conclusion, findings suggest induces hepatic dysfunction through ROS-mediated This information provides novel insights into potential environmental risk hazardous pollutants co-existence ecosystems.

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) are the fastest-growing class in agricultural protection. They target nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) pests, stimulating nervous system at low doses and causing paralysis death higher concentrations. NNIs used crop protection, seed treatment, forestry, agriculture, flea control domestic cattle. Effective lower concentrations offering long-term control, favoured for their systemic activity. However, due to water solubility, mobility, moderate persistence, easily contaminate adjacent aquatic environments via runoff, leaching, or spray drift. While less toxic vertebrates, widespread use poses threats terrestrial organisms, neurotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, immunotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, endocrine disruption, reproductive malformations. This review synthesizes research address knowledge gaps on environmental impact of proposes policies mitigate harmful effects non-target species.
