Plastic pollution has emerged as one of our most pervasive and pressing environmental issues, impacting ecosystems, wildlife, even human health globally. Microplastic research primarily focused on oceans, whether in water, sediments, or organisms, generating a significant gap understanding their presence impact other environments like rivers, which is concern worldwide, paramount importance for us Latin America the Caribbean. To address this situation, we examined current microplastics South American rivers by conducting Google Scholar search with keywords Boolean operators, allowed to recover series articles related topic. We reviewed 49 published 2023 know methods collecting analyzing river samples. Our findings revealed limited information America, data only from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru. Additionally, found considerable variations sample collection analysis methods, hindering study comparisons. Bridging knowledge crucial comprehending extent plastic region. Since are major microplastic contributors will significantly aid protection efforts, emphasizing global relevance addressing riverine pollution.
