PFASs are linked to serious health and environmental concerns. Among their widespread applications, known be used in food packaging directly contribute human exposure. However, information about is scattered. Therefore, we systematically map the evidence on detected migrates extracts of contact materials provide an overview available hazard biomonitoring data. Based FCCmigex database, 68 have been identified various materials, including paper, plastic, coated metal, by targeted untargeted analyses. 87% these belong perfluorocarboxylic acids fluorotelomer-based compounds. Trends chain length demonstrate that long-chain perfluoroalkyl continue found, despite years global efforts reduce use substances. We utilized ToxPi illustrate data for only 57% packaging. For those which toxicity testing has performed, many adverse outcomes reported. The knowledge gaps presented here support international proposals restrict as a group, protect health.

Abstract Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a huge group of anthropogenic chemicals with unique properties that used in countless products applications. Due to the high stability their C-F bonds, PFAS or transformation (TPs) persistent environment, leading ubiquitous detection various samples worldwide. Since industrial chemicals, availability authentic reference standards is limited, making non-target screening (NTS) approaches based on high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) necessary for more comprehensive characterization. NTS usually time-consuming process, since only small fraction detected can be identified. Therefore, efficient prioritization relevant HRMS signals one most crucial steps. We developed PFΔ Screen , Python-based open-source tool simple graphical user interface (GUI) perform feature using several PFAS-specific techniques such as highly promising MD/C-m/C approach, Kendrick defect analysis, diagnostic fragments (MS 2 ), fragment differences suspect screening. Feature from vendor-independent MS raw data (mzML, data-dependent acquisition) performed via pyOpenMS (or custom lists) subsequent calculations identification both HPLC- GC-HRMS data. The workflow presented four PFAS-contaminated agricultural soil south-western Germany. Over 15 classes (more than 80 single compounds isomers) could identified, including novel classes, potentially TPs precursors fluorotelomer mercapto alkyl phosphates (FTMAPs). within Python environment easily automatically installable executable Windows. This study, one of the few conducted to date on working farms in US, examined per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination 10 treated with biosolids using a paired control-treatment approach. Biosolids are nutrient-rich inexpensive soil amendments, however, if contain PFAS which known be toxic, mobile bioaccumulate, they can leave lasting negative impacts farming water. Our study showed significantly higher concentrations biosolids-treated (treatment) soils compared (untreated) controls. Soil depth, physicochemical properties (e.g., organic matter pH), sources affected types soils. While precursors were present biosolids, absent soils, likely due biotransformation terminal perfluoroalkyl products. The detection shorter-chain surface water highlights their greater mobility, raising concerns beyond boundaries farms.

This study presents a novel semiquantification approach for nontarget screening (NTS), combining matrix-matched calibration and ionization class-specific average curves (ACCs) to address the lack of analytical reference standards most per- polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Ionization ACCs carboxylic sulfonic acids, sulfonamides, cationic PFAS result in high accuracy, with median absolute accuracy quotients below 2.27×. The was applied soil impacted by aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) contamination. A total 96 tentatively identified were semiquantified addition 28 quantified compounds based on available standards. Semiquantified concentrations exceeded those target analytes, demonstrating critical role this method capturing broader In case, validation against extractable organofluorine (EOF) showed 102% closed mass balance. innovative not only enables comprehensive contamination assessment complex matrices but also expands scope NTS environmental monitoring, remediation, risk AFFF-contaminated sites.
