BackgroundMicroplastic (MP) pollution has emerged as a significant environmental concern worldwide. While extensive research focused on their presence in marine organisms and ecosystems, potential impact human health, particularly the circulatory system, remains understudied. This project aimed to identify quantify mass concentrations, polymer types, physical properties of MPs thrombi surgically retrieved from both arterial venous systems at three anatomically distinct sites, namely, cerebral arteries brain, coronary heart, deep veins lower extremities. Furthermore, this study investigate association between levels disease severity.MethodsThrombus samples were collected 30 patients who underwent thrombectomy procedures due ischaemic stroke (IS), myocardial infarction (MI), or vein thrombosis (DVT). Pyrolysis–gas chromatography spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) was employed concentrations MPs. Laser direct infrared (LDIR) spectroscopy scanning electron microscopy (SEM) used analyse Demographic clinical information also examined. A rigorous quality control system eliminate contamination.FindingsMPs detected by Py-GC/MS 80% (24/30) obtained with IS, MI, DVT, median 61.75 μg/g, 141.80 69.62 respectively. Among 10 target types MP polymers, polyamide 66 (PA66), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE) identified. Further analyses suggested that higher may be associated greater severity (adjusted β = 7.72, 95% CI: 2.01–13.43, p < 0.05). The level D-dimer MP-detected group significantly than MP-undetected (8.3 ± 1.5 μg/L vs 6.6 0.5 μg/L, 0.001). Additionally, LDIR analysis showed PE dominant among 15 identified MPs, accounting for 53.6% all mean diameter 35.6 μm. shapes polymers using SEM found heterogeneous.InterpretationThis presents qualitative quantitative evidence thrombotic diseases through use multimodal detection methods. Higher increased severity. Future larger sample size is urgently needed sources exposure validate observed trends study.FundingThis funded SUMC Scientific Research Initiation Grant (SRIG, No. 009-510858038), Postdoctoral (No. 202205230031-3), 2020 Li Ka Shing Foundation Cross-Disciplinary 2020LKSFG02C).

Humans are constantly exposed to micro- and nanosized plastics (MNPs); however, there is still limited understanding of their fate within the body, partially due limitations with current analytical techniques. The study assessed appropriateness pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) analysis for quantification a range polymers in human blood. An extraction protocol that reduced matrix interferences (false positives) polyethylene (PE) polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was developed validated. Extraction recoveries ranged 7–109%, although surface-modified polystyrene (carboxylated) increased nanoparticle from 17 52%. Realistic detection limits were calculated each polymer, accounting suppression recovery. These up 20 times higher than nominal Milli-Q water. Finally, method tested pilot Australian population. PE but present, no other above limits. It concluded Py-GC-MS currently not suitable PVC biological matrices presence nonspecific pyrolysis products. Furthermore, while it plausible detect some blood, estimated exposure concentrations needed approaching technique.

The environmental pollutant Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is commonly found in the environment, with microplastics (MPs) acting as primary carriers of BaP into living organisms, increasing its availability body. However, specific pathways and mechanisms through which MPs carrying pollutants cause kidney damage are not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate routes injury mice low concentrations both BaP. combination polystyrene (PS) disrupted lipid metabolism kidneys, leading a form cell death known ferroptosis. this effect was observed HK-2 cells vitro, indicating cell-specific response. Interestingly, HIEC-6 cells, PS directly induced These findings confirm that exposure can disrupt metabolic homeostasis contributing dysfunction death. Polystyrene induce ferroptosis by disrupting intestinal metabolites, disfunction.

Precocious puberty (PP) is a common pediatric endocrine disorder that affects children's growth and sexual development. Environmental pollutants, especially microplastics (MPs), may be an important triggering factors in PP. MPs were widely found living environment, while the impact of on pubertal development remains unknown. In this study, 14 serum samples collected from central precocious (CPP) girls healthy controls. The concentration total CPP (68.19 ± 26.49 mg/kg) showed significant increase than controls (36.94 13.22 mg/kg). 5 11 types detected, among which PE (CPP, 28.22 %; Control, 31.62 %) PVC 62.67 58.14 being dominant ones. Correlation analysis between sex hormone revealed negatively correlated with progesterone positively dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS). order to investigate toxic effects onset, young female mice at 21 days orally administered various concentrations for two weeks. Female exposed (PE, 3 mg/day; PVC, 6 mg/day) had advanced vaginal opening, none changes body weight. Immunohistochemical staining demonstrated exposure during could activate microglia, astrocytes promote GnRH expression hypothalamus, leading earlier onset. These data suggested can absorbed accumulated brain gonad after gavage, accelerate initiation. This study provided valuable evidence threatened normal progression

Because of the ubiquity microplastics (MPs) in environment there are concerns regarding human exposure. In this study, MPs have been determined three physiological fluids: urine, sputum and bronchoalveolar fluid (BALF); from 30 adult patients Iran with respiratory conditions. A total nine small (20 - 100 μm) mainly green red fibres polyethylene, polypropylene polystyrene construction were detected urine samples eight participants. By contrast, 358 that dominated by small, white transparent fibres, but also included larger (100 500 fragments spherules, samples. Here, a broader range polymers was identified polyurethane dominant. BALF samples, 123 higher proportion along spherules. The colour distribution these similar to polymer closer These observations suggest inhaled ingested might be fractionated differently though body. Further research is required elucidate how particles than theoretical limits (set filtration mechanisms) present fluids, what fractionation processes present, whether or responsible for acute chronic health impacts.
