Nocturnal light pollution can have profound effects on humans and other organisms. Recent research indicates that nighttime outdoor lighting is increasing rapidly. Evidence from controlled laboratory studies demonstrates nocturnal exposure strain the visual system, disrupt circadian physiology, suppress melatonin secretion, impair sleep. There a growing body of work pointing to adverse human health, including risk chronic diseases, but this knowledge in more nascent stage. In Review, we synthesize recent context-specific factors physiology relevant relation health society, identify critical areas for future research, highlight policy steps recommendations mitigating urban environment.

Studying human activity in coastal areas is crucial for urban planning, sustainability, and economic development. However, there limited evidence of ongoing monitoring activities these areas. Thus, a quantitative analysis the spatio-temporal changes, trends, variability Nighttime light (NTL) Italian Coastal Zone over past decade (2014-2023) was conducted to assess dynamics. The findings our study indicate following: (1) NTL increases years both extent intensity along zone; (2) vary by season, with zone being brighter summer; (3) highly heterogeneous pattern found where some locations became hot spots (significant upward trend) or cold downward while others remain unchanged. By explaining intensification activity, this can provide insight into identifying patterns development environmental conditions contributing more effective planning zones.

Understanding the causes and potential mitigations of light pollution requires measuring monitoring artificial at night (ALAN). We review how ALAN is measured, both from ground through remote sensing by satellites in Earth orbit. A variety techniques are described, including single-channel photometers, all-sky cameras, drones. Spectroscopic differences between sources can be used to determine which most responsible for pollution, but they complicate interpretation photometric data. The variability Earth’s atmosphere leads difficulty comparisons datasets. Theoretical models provide complementary information calibrate experiments interpret their results. Here, we identify several shortcomings challenges current approaches suggest ways forward.

Light pollution from the use of artificial lighting poses significant impacts on human health, traffic safety, ecological environment, astronomy, and energy use. The advancement characteristics light assessment technology has played a role in shaping prevention control policies, thereby enabling measures, such as environmental standards legislation product procurement guidelines, but considerable variation definition, strategies, regulatory frameworks remains. Therefore, there is need to review pollution, including technique, policy, legislation. Through literature review, it can be found that technical are required prevent pollution. For example, decreased by 6% France through light. Key approaches suggested global implementing ambient brightness zoning, regulating usage, establishing dark sky reserves. Technology policy should integrated. precise data coming satellite imagery, drones, balloons could provide guidance when making policies.

The most widely used radiance sensor for monitoring Night Sky Brightness (NSB) is the Quality Meter (SQM), making its measurement stability fundamental. A method using Sun as a calibrator was applied to analyse quality of measures recorded in Veneto Region (Italy) and at La Silla (Chile). analysis mainly revealed tendency toward reductions measured NSB due both instrument ageing atmospheric variations. This work compared component instrumental with contribution conditions. spectral responsivity two SQMs working outdoors were analysed laboratory after several years operation, revealing significant decay, but not enough justify long-term trends. variations studied through solar irradiance ground, considering it an indicator air transparency, values aerosol optical depth obtained from satellite measurements. trends by weather stations different altitudes conditions indicated increase Italian study sites. comparison among daily increase, reduction depth, measurements highlighted darker sky sites contaminated light pollution (LP) brighter affected LP, showing predominant role relation change. In case, fraction variation explained AOD changes exceeded 75%.

Artificial lighting at night (ALAN) leads to pervasive light pollution, affecting ecosystems and human health globally. Satellite assessments reveal widespread nocturnal illumination worldwide research indicates adverse effects. Environmental pollution disrupts natural cycles, the behavior reproduction of various organisms. In this narrative review we aimed present on effects ALAN glucose metabolism diabetes hone its recently reported association with gestational (GDM). Conflicting data exist melatonin's administration vis-à-vis glycemia, some studies suggesting beneficial outcomes for patients type 2 mellitus insomnia. Ambient influences plasma glucose, bright increasing both fasting postprandial levels. Perinatal exposure is linked later-life risks prenatal fetal macrosomia. Analyzing European in conjunction epidemiological records GDM reveals a notable probable association. Additionally, recent from China (one case-control two cohort studies) has shown that during pregnancy significantly increases risk GDM. Despite progress, interdisciplinary needed understand impact health, especially regarding disrupted light-dark cycles physiological functions relevant conditions like At present, simplest advice all people particularly women who anticipate pregnancy, or pregnant women, ensure totally dark environment sleep time.
