Reaching net-zero GHG emission targets will require transitions in all socio-technical systems, including electricity, mobility, heating, and agri-food. While most research focuses on single it is essential to also investigate multi-system interactions since innovations like electric vehicles, heat pumps, or circular economy initiatives between multiple systems. Although extant acknowledges this topic some extent, offers limited understandings of the causal processes underpinning interaction. Building sustainability literature, paper therefore aims develop a first inventory transitions, focused technological, actor, institutional dimensions. To elaborate substantiate contribution, applies narrative review methodology identify six based integration insights from relevant social science theories with dynamics approach Multi-level Perspective. We illustrate examples transition articulate their implications for speed change.

In advanced transition processes sector coupling becomes key to reach net zero objectives. The literature on multi-system interactions addresses the of different systems by analysing how technologies, institutions, and actors connect. Our contribution zooms in better understanding concrete activities characteristics who work integrate systems. It is crucial understand realise integration sectors as represents a major bottleneck accelerating processes. To identify their activities, we build recently established concept work, which adapts institutional framework for use analysis link it 'system entanglers'. System entanglers are connect Empirically, apply our conceptual three qualitative case studies hydrogen-based projects within mobility, heating, industry Germany. We find that system cross-sectoral competencies learning, well fostering between-system links, further discuss sectoral context, constellation projects, self-perception respective matter.

A key challenge to achieving a net-zero transition by mid-century is rapid diffusion of several low-carbon technologies which requires massive upscaling production capacity including vast use material resources. However, both theory and main studies frameworks pay insufficient attention the role To better understand relationships between diffusion, production, in technology transitions, we conceptually elaborate resources value chain perspective on Technological Innovation Systems (TIS). We account for how scarcity appears it influences TIS structural functional dynamics with particular actors along respond. Our study China's Electric Vehicle lithium-ion battery shows that shortage critical materials occurred due tensions sectoral regimes influenced within across sectors. The contributes new insights circular chains, growth phase unfolds, urgency geopolitics influence diffusion.

Carboxylic Acid Enhanced Nano Zero-Valent Iron for Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia DOI

Published: Jan. 1, 2025

Ammonia (NH3), a widely used chemical product, has various applications in numerous fields. However, the high energy consumption of traditional ammonia synthesis process is inconsistent with pursuit "zero carbon," and there an urgent need for new method to synthesize NH3. The electrocatalytic NO3–-to-NH3 (NITRR) offers ideal route synthesizing NH3 under ambient conditions. Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) been nitrate wastewater treatment due its environmental friendliness, low cost, activity. nZVI difficult recover prone deactivation because tendency corrode agglomerate. Here, we report enhance activity stability through carboxylic acid modification. In this study, oxalic citric modified on foam nickel substrates (OA-nZVI/NF, CA-nZVI/NF) were examined as examples. Experiments confirmed that Faraday efficiency (FENH3) from OA-nZVI/NF CA-nZVI/NF was 84.9% 91.47%, respectively, at −0.4 V vs. RHE, which significantly higher than nZVI/NF (64.5%). More importantly, FENH3 electrodes did not decrease after continuous electrolysis 100 hours. Subsequently, electrochemical characterization control experiments revealed modification reduced corrosion potential promoted generation hydrogen-free radicals (H*) nZVI/NF. This work provides economical feasible approach improving corrosion-prone deactivated materials.
