Aquaporins in the male reproductive tract and sperm: Functional implications and cryobiology

State-of-the-art of boar sperm preservation in liquid and frozen state

Pig breeding is mainly conducted through Artificial Insemination (AI) in Western and developing countries.Apart from requiring specific catheters trained staff, preserving boar semen proper conditions needed to ensure high reproductive performances.Although, at present, sperm may be preserved liquid (15-17ºC) or frozen states, more than 95% of AIs are using semen.The present work reviews the state-the-art these two preservation technologies.Thus, composition types extenders for liquid-stored discussed, together with requirements sperm, which stored 15-17ºC.Commercial compared effects storage on quality also summarised.In second part manuscript, main features cryopreservation described reference cryodamage made.These cryoinjuries affect motility, membrane permeability chromatin integrity.Furthermore, individual variability resilience withstand procedures reviewed a brief summary about freezability markers included.Final sections briefly discuss improvement freezing additives, such as seminal plasma antioxidants, highlight relevance AI technique avoid dramatic drops performance.
