Abstract Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a key technique in developing sensor platforms for clinical diagnostics, drug discovery, food quality, and environmental monitoring applications. While prism‐coupled (Kretschmann) SPR remains “gold‐standard” laboratory work‐flows due to easier fabrication, handling high through put, other configurations such as grating‐coupled (GC‐SPR) wave‐guide mode are yet fulfil their technology potential. This work evaluates the technical aspects influencing performance of GC‐SPR reviews recent progress fabrication platforms. In principle, involves illumination plasmonic metal film with periodic gratings excite surface plasmons (SP) via diffraction‐based phase matching. The real is, however, heavily influenced by topography grating structures produced top‐down lithography techniques. review discusses latest approaches achieve consistent uniform features periodicity over large scale explores choice plasmon‐active substrate material enhanced performance. also provides insights into different measurement highlights on opportunities potential applications biosensors translational capabilities.
