Light is known to elicit non-image-forming responses, such as effects on alertness. This has been reported especially during light exposure at night. Nighttime results might not be translatable the day. article aims provide an overview of (1) neural mechanisms regulating alertness, (2) ways measuring and quantifying (3) current literature specifically regarding different intensities white various measures correlates alertness daytime. In general, present provides inconclusive alerting intensity daytime, particularly for objective However, research paradigms employed in earlier studies differed substantially, most tested only a limited set lighting conditions. Therefore, potential more intense should investigated systematic, dose-dependent manner with multiple within one experimental paradigm over course

Light exposure elicits numerous effects on human physiology and behavior, such as better cognitive performance mood. Here we investigated the role of morning light a countermeasure for impaired mood under sleep restriction (SR). Seventeen participants took part 48h laboratory protocol, during which three different settings (separated by 2 wks) were administered each after two 6-h nights: blue monochromatic LED (light-emitting diode) condition (BL; 100 lux at 470 nm 20 min) starting h scheduled wake-up time, dawn-simulating (DsL) 30 min before ending time (polychromatic gradually increasing from 0 to 250 lux), dim (DL) beginning upon wake (<8 lux). Cognitive tasks performed every wakefulness, questionnaires hourly assess subjective sleepiness, mood, well-being. Salivary melatonin cortisol collected throughout wakefulness in regular intervals, measured only one pulse. Following first SR, analysis course indicated decrease following DL, whereas it remained stable BL significantly improved DsL. levels second day SR not affected conditions. However, both nights, well-being enhanced DsL compared with DL BL. Melatonin onset occurred earlier exposure, than salivary higher DL. Our data indicate that an artificial dawn simulation improves well-being, performance, BL, minimal impact circadian phase. Thus, may provide effective strategy enhancing mild restriction.

Circadian rhythms act to optimise many aspects of our biology and thereby ensure that physiological processes are occurring at the most appropriate time. The importance this temporal control is demonstrated by strong associations between circadian disruption, morbidity disease pathology. There now a wealth evidence linking timing system metabolic physiology nutrition. Relationships these often reciprocal, such drives changes in pathways metabolic/nutritional status alter core molecular components rhythms. Examples include daily glucose homeostasis, insulin sensitivity postprandial response. Time day alters lipid profiles following individual meals whereas, over longer time scale, meal regulates adiposity body weight; may occur via ability timed feeding synchronise local metabolically active tissues. Much work research field has utilised animal cellular model systems. Although studies highly informative persuasive, there largely unmet need translate basic biological data humans. results translational open up possibilities for using dietary manipulations help restore synchrony downstream physiology. Given large number individuals with disrupted due to, example, shift work, jet-lag, sleep disorders blindness, could provide widespread improvements health also economic performance.
