Ocular light exposure has important influences on human health and well-being through modulation of circadian rhythms sleep, as well neuroendocrine cognitive functions. Prevailing patterns do not optimally engage these actions for many individuals, but advances in our understanding the underpinning mechanisms emerging lighting technologies now present opportunities to adjust promote optimal physical mental performance. A newly developed, international standard provides a SI-compliant way quantifying influence intrinsically photosensitive, melanopsin-expressing, retinal neurons that mediate effects. The report recommendations lighting, based an expert scientific consensus expressed easily measured quantity (melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance (melaponic EDI)) defined within this standard. are supported by detailed analysis sensitivity circadian, neuroendocrine, alerting responses ocular provide straightforward framework inform design practice.

At the core of human thought, for majority individuals in developed nations at least, there is tacit assumption that as a species we are unfettered by demands imposed our biology and can do what want, whatever time choose, whereas reality every aspect physiology behaviour constrained 24 h beat arising from deep within evolution. Our daily circadian rhythms sleep/wake cycle allow us to function optimally dynamic world, adjusting day/night cycle. The themes this review focus upon growing realization ignore sleep systems peril, paper considers mechanisms generate regulate systems; happens mechanistically when these collapse result societal pressures disease; how disruption stress linked; why mental illness invariably occur together; employers attempt mitigate some problems associated with working against internal temporal biology. While health costs be reduced, short-term will always significant negative consequences shift work loss. With mind, society needs address issue decide justified workplace.

Light can impact human health via the visual and non-visual systems originating in retina of eye or as optical radiation falling on skin. This paper provides a summary what is known about these impacts. Topics covered include aspects lighting likely to cause eyestrain headaches; increase risk falls; induce circadian disruption; enhance sleep; mitigate Alzheimer’s disease depression; produce tissue damage; alleviate diseases through phototherapy inactivate viruses germicidal irradiation. It concluded that undoubtedly influenced by lighting, but there are four conditions should be attached such simple assertion. First, either positive negative. Second, affected many factors other than lighting. Third, severity effects light exposure vary widely from short-lived trivial long-term fatal. Fourth, same have very different impacts for individuals depending their age medical status. Taken together, imply care required when judging veracity relevance broad assertions benefits health.

Light use is rising steeply, mainly because of the advent light-emitting diode (LED) devices. LEDs are frequently blue-enriched light sources and may have different impacts on non-image forming (NIF) system, which maximally sensitive to blue-wavelength light. Most importantly, timing LED device widespread, leading novel exposure patterns NIF system. The goal this narrative review discuss multiple aspects that we think should be accounted for when attempting predict how situation will affect impact brain functions. We first cover both image-forming pathways brain. then detail our current understanding human cognition, sleep, alertness, mood. Finally, questions concerning adoption lighting screens, offer new opportunities improve well-being, but also raise concerns about increasing exposure, detrimental health, particularly in evening.

Abstract To investigate the impact of sleep deprivation (SD) on mood, alertness, and resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG), we present an eyes-open EEG dataset. The dataset comprises recordings cognitive data from 71 participants undergoing two testing sessions: one involving SD other normal sleep. In each session, engaged in EEG. Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) was employed for alertness measurement. Emotional sleepiness were measured using Positive Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) Stanford Sleepiness (SSS). Additionally, to examine influence individual quality traits SD, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) utilized. This dataset’s sharing may contribute open measurements field SD.

Light significantly improves alertness during the night (Cajochen, Sleep Med Rev, 11, 2007 and 453; Ruger et al., AJP Regul Integr Comp Physiol, 290, 2005 R1413), but results are less conclusive at daytime (Lok J Biol Rhythms, 33, 2018 589). Melatonin core body temperature levels those times of day may contribute to differences in alerting effects light. In this experiment, combined effect exogenous melatonin administration light intensity on alertness, temperature, skin was studied.
