A century-long debate on bodily states and emotions persists. While the involvement of activity in emotion physiology is widely recognized, specificity causal role such related to brain dynamics has not yet been demonstrated. We hypothesize that peripheral neural control cardiovascular prompts sustains during an emotional experience, so these afferent inputs are processed by triggering a concurrent efferent information transfer body. To this end, we investigated functional brain–heart interplay under elicitation publicly available data from 62 healthy subjects using computational model based synthetic generation electroencephalography electrocardiography signals. Our findings show sympathovagal plays leading initiating response, which ascending modulations vagal precede correlate reported level arousal. The subsequent dynamic observed between central autonomic nervous systems processing These should be particularly revealing for psychophysiology neuroscience emotions.

Emotions are fundamental to our experience and behavior, affecting motivating all aspects of lives. Scientists various disciplines have been fascinated by emotions for centuries, yet even today vigorous debates abound about how define best study their neural underpinnings. Defining from an evolutionary perspective acknowledging important functional roles in supporting survival allows the emotion states diverse species. This approach enables taking advantage modern tools behavioral, systems, circuit neurosciences, allowing precise dissection mechanisms behavior underlying processes model organisms. Here we review findings processing across species try identify points convergence as well next steps pursuit understanding emerge activity.

The transmission of the heartbeat through cerebral vascular system causes intracranial pressure pulsations. We discovered that arterial pulsations can directly modulate central neuronal activity. In a semi-intact rat brain preparation, elicited correlated local field oscillations in olfactory bulb mitral cell layer. These did not require synaptic but reflected baroreceptive transduction cells. This was mediated by fast excitatory mechanosensitive ion channel and modulated spiking awake animals, entrained activity subset neurons within ~20 milliseconds. Thus, we propose this fast, intrinsic interoceptive mechanism perception-for example, during arousal-within possibly across various other areas.

Negative psychological states impact immunity by altering the gut microbiome. However, relationship between brain and microbiome composition remains unclear. We show that Brunner's glands in duodenum couple stress-sensitive circuits to bacterial homeostasis. mediated enrichment of Lactobacillus species response vagus nerve stimulation. Cell-specific ablation markedly suppressed Lactobacilli counts heightened vulnerability infection. In forebrain, we mapped a vagally mediated, polysynaptic circuit connecting central nucleus amygdala glands. Chronic stress activity phenocopied effects gland lesions. Conversely, excitation either or parasympathetic vagal neurons activated reversed on immunity. The findings revealed tractable brain-body mechanism linking host defense.
