The slow growth rate of the anammox bacteria (AnAOB) resulting in a long startup period process has resulted scientists trying to find long-lasting solution. Anammox granular sludge (AnGS) application is one such solution being proffered by researchers order ensure feasibility industrial-scale application. Granulation sludge, compared other enrichment strategies used help shorten process, appears be most feasible option for realization large-scale application, since it stated effective retention biomass and, unlike addition carriers, further ensures an even better mixing biomass. In this review, properties, influencing factors, limitations, cultivation, and detailed research progress granules are discussed. It hoped that review could serve as invaluable guide future engineering applications (AnGS).

Partial nitritation-anammox (PN-A) process, which significantly reduces energy and chemical input compared to the conventional biological nitrogen removal is a game-changing nitrogen-removal alternative. PN-A treating municipal wastewater (mainstream PN-A) may shed light on achieving more sustainable energy-neutral treatment, but practical applications are still not available. This review therefore critically conducted identify challenges impeding application of mainstream PN-A. At temperatures ≥ 25 °C, process can achieve comparable performance processes, effluent quality need be improved meet stringent discharge standards; at < 20 long-term instability, low efficiency, poor main operating difficulties. The reasons attributed in maintaining sufficient anammox activity effective NOB suppression. A framework operable solutions these difficulties suggested, among efficient biomass retention should prioritized. effectiveness availability also assessed. Ultimately, depending technological readiness, roadmap for proposed make best benefits promote implementation energy-neutral/positive treatment.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a promising biological nitrogen removal process, due to its advantages of high efficiency and low cost. However, problems remain in the application, such as long startup period susceptibility environmental variations. Quorum sensing (QS), means bacterial communication, attracts more attentions regulating aggregation behavior microbial density. Many physiological characteristics anammox bacteria have been confirmed be associated with QS, including specific activity, growth rate production extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which directly affect performance process. Therefore, comprehensive understanding QS process prerequisite. This work systematically reviewed role application focus on mechanism. Additionally, current challenges research needs were proposed.
