Nanofiltration membranes with both high water permeance and selectivity are perpetually studied because of their applications in purification. However, these two critical attributes considered to be mutually exclusive. Here, we introduce a polar solvent, dichloromethane, place the apolar hexane used for decades as organic phase membrane interfacial polymerization synthesis solve this dilemma. When solvent is combined solvent-resistant aramid nanofibrous hydrogel film phase, monomer enrichment reaction zone leads polyamide nanofiltration densely distributed nanobubble features, enhanced nanoporosity, loosened backbone. Benefiting from structural resulting exhibits superior properties combination (52.7 L m–2 h–1 bar–1) (water/Na2SO4, 36 bar–1; NaCl/Na2SO4, 357 bar–1), outperforming traditional membranes. We envision that novel technology involving systems would provide new opportunities development environmental engineering.

Efforts toward the denovo design of artificial water channels have been made over last decades to understand selectivity transport through membranes and their applications in purification desalination. Currently, many insights are needed elucidate complex selective vs ion/proton mechanism Å-scaled channels. Generally, a narrow pore is required for driving off large ions or solutes selectively allowing only molecules enter then forming an uninterrupted single wire clusters within confined conditions. Several classes channels, including self-assembled organic cages, carbon-based nanopores, aromatic foldamers, pillar[n]arenes, macrocycles systematically outlined this review terms structural properties mechanism. Additionally, molecular simulation analysis can be applied verify spatial atomic distribution importantly it enables reveal deep understanding arrangement these pores. Herein, will introduce recent achievements listing how astonishing examples operate presence molecules, may arouse more inspiring views continued research field channel-forming assemblies application purification.
