On the 40th anniversary of John Kingdon’s Agendas, Alternatives, and Public Policies, Multiple Streams Framework (MSF) is more vibrant than ever. In this contribution, we briefly summarize development MSF from its inception to present day. Next, three important theoretical methodological advances in over past decade. Regarding advancements, focus on (1) application stages policy process following agenda-setting, (2) transfer different institutional contexts, (3) new actor roles reasoning. our discussion highlight hypotheses, best practices for operationalizing framework’s figurative concepts, suggestions quantitatively testing individual aspects theorizing. We conclude by assessing that research has addressed many criticisms literature (such as inconsistent operationalization key concepts or story-telling rather hypotheses-testing). However, scholars must also use these advancements apply framework rigorously take advantage explanatory potential framework.

Abstract Most policy process frameworks were developed in the US but are also applied to (Western) Europe. However, processes, relevant actors, and institutional setting differ substantially. Hence, question arises if certain concepts that important European context missing from have been adapted take these into account. Reception and Translation into the Local Context: The Timing, Lifespan, and Age of Reforms DOI Creative Commons

Abstract This chapter introduces three temporalities—timing, lifespan, and age—that capture the various trajectories of SAWA adoption translation at both national local levels. The multiple streams framework, theories that explain reform intensity shortly before after a change in administration, externalization thesis are well-known interpretive frameworks help timing policy borrowing. In contrast, further research is needed on why some reforms short-lived while others sustained institutionalized.
