Herein,
we
report
a
naturally
occurring
flavonol,
quercetagetin
5,6,7,3′,4′-pentamethyl
ether
(known
as
marionol),
nontoxic
fluorescent
probe
for
rapid,
sensitive,
and
selective
detection
of
Cu2+
in
water.
The
interaction
between
marionol
ions
is
studied
by
various
state-of-the-art
spectroscopic
techniques
such
1H
NMR,
UV–vis,
fluorescence,
high-resolution
mass
spectrometry
(HRMS).
Marionol
shows
strong
fluorescence
quenching
the
presence
Cu2+,
whereas
other
interfering
cations
Fe3+,
Co2+,
Al3+,
Pb2+,
Hg2+,
Zn2+,
Mg2+,
Mn2+,
Ca2+,
Cu+,
Ag+,

cells,
potassium
(K+)
is

most
abundant
cation
and
plays
a
key
role

maintaining
osmotic
balance.
Magnesium
(Mg2+)

as
an
enzyme
cofactor.
Microbes
typically
require
transition
metals
manganese
(Mn),
iron
(Fe),
copper
(Cu),
zinc
(Zn),

precise

metal
needed
to
sustain
life

Intracellular
pools
can
be
conceptualized
chemically
complex
mixture
rapidly
exchanging
(labile)
ions,
complemented

reservoirs
that

cell

(sequestered).
Labile
buffered
transient
interactions
with
anionic
metabolites
macromolecules,
ribosome
playing

Copper
is
an
essential
nutrient
for
sustaining
vital
cellular
processes
spanning
respiration,
metabolism,
and
proliferation.
However,
loss
of
copper
homeostasis,
particularly
misregulation

occurs
in
major
diseases
