Understanding how nonelectroactive bacteria (non-EAB) perceive and respond to electro-stimulation is pivotal for optimizing electro-biostimulation systems. Here, Escherichia coli, a representative non-EAB, was employed investigate its electrical response behavior molecular regulatory mechanism across spectrum of current densities. Accelerated bacterial growth observed at densities ranging from 2 10 A m–2 with maximum rate 1.89 h–1 m–2. Moderate electrostimulation (10 m–2) promoted NADH regeneration adenosine triphosphate synthesis by modulating intracellular glycolytic flux, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle electron transport chain (ETC), while cells became inactivated 20 mainly due the overall inhibition TCA domino collapse ETC. The presence reductive stress caused not only NADPH glutamine consumption but also impacted material exchange fluxes altering outer membrane proteins (OMPs) β-fold β-corner. Additionally, extracellular polymeric substances served as transient medium sense electro-stimulation. study revealed that non-EAB possessed approaches different EET improved comprehension mechanisms governing catabolic pathways under holds promise developing more efficient systems, implications environmental biotechnology applications.

Electron transfer (ET) is the fundamental redox process of life and element cycling. The ET distance normally as short nanometers or micrometers in subsurface. However, gradient subsurface long centimeters even meters. This gap triggers an intriguing question whether directional long-distance from reduced to oxidized zones exists along gradient. By using electron-donating capacity variation a proxy ET, we show that can last over 10 cm sediment columns, through chain constituted by series short-distance electron hopping reactions. Microbial chemical processes synergistically mediate chain, with estimated flux 6.73 μmol e−/cm2 per day. represents overlooked but important "remote" source electrons for local biogeochemical environmental processes.
