In the last few decades, pharmaceuticals, credited with saving millions of lives, have emerged as a new class environmental contaminant. These compounds can both chronic and acute harmful effects on natural flora fauna. The presence pharmaceutical contaminants in ground waters, surface waters (lakes, rivers, streams), sea water, wastewater treatment plants (influents effluents), soils, sludges has been well doccumented. A range methods including oxidation, photolysis, UV-degradation, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, adsorption used for their remediation from aqueous systems. Many commercially limited by toxic sludge generation, incomplete removal, high capital operating costs, need skilled maintenance personnel. Adsorption technologies are low-cost alternative, easily developing countries where there is dearth advanced technologies, personnel, available capital, appears to be most broadly feasible removal method. integrated (WWTPs). Herein, we reviewed literature (1990–2018) illustrating rising contamination concerns efforts emphasizing adsorption.

This study used suspect and nontarget screening with high-resolution mass spectrometry to characterize the occurrence of contaminants emerging concern (CECs) in nearshore marine environment Puget Sound (WA). In total, 87 non-polymeric CECs were identified; those confirmed reference standards (45) included pharmaceuticals, herbicides, vehicle-related compounds, plasticizers, flame retardants. Eight polyfluoroalkyl substances detected; perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) concentrations as high 72–140 ng/L at one location. Low levels methamphetamine detected 41% samples. Transformation products pesticides tentatively identified, including two novel transformation tebuthiuron. While a hydrodynamic simulation, analytical results, dilution calculations demonstrated prevalence wastewater effluent environments, identity abundance selected revealed additional contributions from stormwater localized urban industrial sources. For CECs, risk quotients calculated based on predicted toxicities, eight had >1. Dilution estuarine lowered risks most wastewater-derived but alone is insufficient mitigate inputs. These findings highlighted necessity importance contamination sources environments.

Organic micropollutants (MPs) are anthropogenic substances that contaminate water resources at trace concentrations. Many MPs, including per- and polyfluorinated alkyl (PFASs), have come under increased scrutiny because of their environmental persistence association with various health problems. A β-cyclodextrin polymer linked tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFN-CDP) has high affinity for cationic many neutral MPs from contaminated anionic groups incorporated during the polymerization. But TFN-CDP does not bind strongly, PFASs. To address this shortcoming, we reduced nitrile in to primary amines, which reverses its towards charged MPs. exhibits adsorption distribution coefficients (log KD values) 2-3 -0.5-1.5 whereas log values 2-4 especially Kinetic studies removal 10 PFASs environmentally relevant concentrations showed 80-98 % all contaminants after 30 min was superior commercial granular activated carbon. Upgrading wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with advanced technologies is one key strategy to reduce micropollutant emissions. Given the complex chemical composition of wastewater, toxicity removal an integral parameter assess performance WWTPs. Thus, goal this systematic review evaluate how effectively ozonation and activated carbon remove in vitro vivo toxicity. Out 2464 publications, we extracted 46 relevant studies conducted at 22 pilot or full-scale We performed a quantitative qualitative evaluation (100 assays) data (20 species), respectively. Data more abundant on (573 points) than (162 points), certain end points (especially estrogenicity) models (e.g., daphnids) dominate. The literature shows that while conventional reduces toxicity, residual effects effluents may represent risk receiving ecosystem basis effect-based trigger values. In general, upgrade will significantly increase similar performance. Nevertheless, generates toxic transformation products can be removed by post-treatment. By assessing growing body studies, identify sensitive underrepresented species provide guidance for future research.
