The fate of 28 trace organic compounds (TrOCs) was investigated in the hyporheic zone (HZ) an urban lowland river Berlin, Germany. Water samples were collected hourly over 17 h and three depths HZ using minipoint samplers. four relatively variable time series subsequently used to calculate first-order removal rates retardation coefficients via a one-dimensional reactive transport model. Reversible sorption processes led substantial many TrOCs along flow path. Some TrOCs, such as dihydroxy-carbamazepine, O-desmethylvenlafaxine, venlafaxine, found be stable HZ. Others readily removed with half-lives first 10 cm ranging from 0.1 ± 0.01 for iopromide 3.3 0.3 tramadol. Removal rate constants majority highest HZ, where biodegradable dissolved matter also highest. Because conditions oxic top 30 path, we attribute this finding high microbial activity typically associated shallow Frequent short vertical exchange flows could therefore more important reach-scale TrOC than long, lateral paths.

When investigating the stream biofilms remove micropollutants from water column, it is important distinguish between different fate processes, such as biotransformation, passive sorption active bioaccumulation. However, due complex nature biofilm community its extracellular matrix, this task often difficult. Effluent-dominated streams are becoming increasingly common in temperate regions and generate complex pharmaceutical mixture exposure conditions that may impact aquatic organisms via drug-drug interactions. Here, we quantified spatiotemporal concentrations composition dynamics during baseflow at four sites a temperate-region effluent-dominated stream (upstream, at, progressively downstream from effluent discharge). Samples were analyzed monthly for 1 year 109 pharmaceuticals/degradates using comprehensive U.S. Geological Survey analytical method biweekly 2 years focused on 14 most pharmaceuticals/degradates. We observed strong chemical gradient with pharmaceuticals only sporadically detected upstream the effluent. Seventy-four individual detected, spanning 5 orders of magnitude 0.28 to 13 500 ng/L, 38 compounds >50% samples. "Biweekly" represented 77 ± 8% overall concentration. The antidiabetic drug metformin consistently had highest concentration limited in-stream attenuation. antihistamine fexofenadine inputs greater warm- than cool-season but also attenuated faster. Differential attenuation (i.e., high = citalopram; low metformin) contributed evolution along reach. This research demonstrates variable over multiple differential evolving biota, implications interactive effects.

By combining small-volume pore water sampling, targeted analysis, suspect screening, along with quantitative real-time PCR time-resolved amplicon Illumina MiSeq sequencing, determined comprehensive set DT50s, associated communities, transformation products. The resulting DT50s parent compounds ranged 0.5 (fluoxetine) to 306 days (carbamazepine), responding significantly four both flow. Bacterial taxa that were biodegradation included Acidobacteria (groups 6, 17, 22), Actinobacteria (Nocardioides Illumatobacter), Bacteroidetes (Terrimonas Flavobacterium) Proteobacteria (Pseudomonadaceae, Sphingomonadaceae, Xanthomonadaceae).
