Lignin is an abundant, renewable, and relatively cheap biobased feedstock that has potential in energy, chemicals, materials. Kraft lignin, more specifically, been used for than 100 years as a self-sustaining energy industry after which it finally reached widespread commercial appeal. Unfortunately, hardwood kraft lignin (HWKL) neglected over these when compared to softwood (SWKL). Therefore, the present work summarizes critically reviews research development (R&D) dealing specifically with HWKL. It will also cover methods HWKL extraction from black liquor, well its structure, properties, fractionation, modification. Finally, reveal several interesting opportunities include dispersants, adsorbents, antioxidants, aromatic compounds (chemicals), additives briquettes, pellets, hydrogels, carbon fibers polymer blends composites. shows great all applications, however R&D needed make utilization economically feasible reach levels market commensurate SWKL. The motivation this critical review galvanize further studies, especially increased understandings field of HWKL, hence amplify much greater utilization.

Spherical lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) fabricated via nanoprecipitation of dissolved are among the most attractive biomass-derived nanomaterials. Despite various studies exploring methods to improve uniformity LNPs or seeking more application opportunities for LNPs, little attention has been given fundamental aspects solvent effects on intrinsic properties LNPs. In this study, we employed a variety experimental techniques and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations investigate The were prepared from softwood Kraft (SKL) using binary solvents aqueous acetone tetrahydrofuran (THF) nanoprecipitation. internal morphology, porosity, mechanical analyzed with electron tomography (ET), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), intermodulation AFM (ImAFM). We found that resulted in smaller higher compared THF, mainly ascribing stronger solvent–lignin interactions as suggested by MD simulation results confirmed 1,4-dioxane (DXN) dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). More importantly, report both compact particles relatively homogeneous density distribution very low porosity structure. stiffness was independent size, Young's modulus range 0.3–4 GPa. Creating multifunctional textiles using chemicals from renewable sources is challenging. In an effort to develop a sustainable and efficient cotton treatment, lignin-based multilayer nanocoating comprising magnesium lignosulfonate, chitosan, monoammonium phosphate (MAP) was deposited layer-by-layer assembly. A five bilayer coating adds 15.5 wt % imparts fire extinguishing behavior excellent UV antimicrobial protection the fabric. Just two sufficient self-extinguishing pass standard vertical flame test. The combined influence of lignin as char-forming UV-protective macromolecule, chitosan biopolymer, MAP acting agent (and blowing acid source in intumescent retardant system) results very powerful textile treatment with few layers deposition.

The more widespread applicability of photopolymerization-based three-dimensional (3D) printing is limited by the availability light-curable resins, most which are based on fossil-derived compounds. We developed a biobased lignin-derivable resin utilizing methacrylated derivatives vanillin, vanillyl alcohol, and eugenol as aromatic monomers. Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) were incorporated functional fillers that enhance print resolution material properties. crosslinking degree, thereby tensile properties, was modulated through use mono- or dimethacrylated vanillin in formulation. LNPs acted UV absorbers, conferring better control photopolymerization process preventing light penetration across unintended layers, leading to enhanced resolution. showed excellent dispersion stability due their size morphology. inclusion up 2 wt% improved ductility 3D printed nanocomposites toughening mechanisms enabled rigid nanoparticles. Finally, exploiting differences degree formulations, multi-material model featuring both soft domains fabricated. This study demonstrates simple but effective strategy for design photocurable resins with tailorable mechanical properties suitable high-resolution printing.

Colloidal lignin particles (CLPs) from softwood kraft were evaluated as a multifunctional ingredient to prepare bio-based oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions. After preliminary screening, three emulsions systems formulated using orange, coconut, and paraffin oils, at varying concentration of CLPs, oil/water ratio, by applying two-step homogenisation processes (rotor-stator followed ultrasonication). Ultrasonication second step considerably enhanced the emulsification efficiency, generating with smaller droplet size less polydisperse distribution. Furthermore, effect ultrasonication on characteristics stability was over time. The oil content type, methods significantly influenced drop size. Higher concentrations CLPs favoured formation emulsion contributed higher physical after 120 days monitoring. in vitro Sun Protection Factor (SPF) results demonstrated that incorporation natural oils containing phenolic compounds formulations improves SPF value emulsions, showing an interesting synergic between vegetable which not observed case oil. broad-spectrum sun blocker confirmed values UVA/UVB 0.74 0.90 Cλ > 380.
