Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an environmental contaminant ubiquitous in water resources, which as a xenobiotic and carcinogenic agent, severely endangers human health. The development of techniques for its efficient removal therefore highly sought after. Herein, we demonstrate unprecedented zirconium-based MOF (PCN-999) possessing Zr6 biformate-bridged (Zr6)2 clusters simultaneously, exhibits exceptional PFOA uptake 1089 mg/g (2.63 mmol/g), representing ca. 50% increase over the previous record MOFs. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies computational analysis revealed that offer additional open coordination sites hosting PFOA. coordinated PFOAs further enhance interaction between free physical adsorption, boosting adsorption capacity to unparalleled high standard. Our findings represent major step forward fundamental understanding MOF-based mechanism, paving way toward rational design next-generation adsorbents per- polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) removal.

Abstract Carbon dots (CDs) are an emerging class of nanomaterials with attractive optical properties, which promise to enable a variety applications. An important and timely question is whether CDs can become functional sustainable alternative incumbent nanomaterials, notably inorganic quantum dots. Herein, the current CD literature comprehensively reviewed as regards their synthesis function, focus on sustainability aspects. The study quantifies why it that be synthesized biomass sole starting material free from toxic precious metals critical raw materials. It further describes analyzes employed pretreatment, chemical‐conversion, purification, processing procedures, highlights issues usage solvents, energy efficiency, safety waste management. specially shown many reported methods concerningly wasteful utilization non‐sustainable solvents energy. finally recommended future studies should explicitly consider discuss environmental influence selected material, generated byproducts, quantitative information required amounts consumables, provided evaluation presented in upscaled context.

The adoption of microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology hinges on the development efficient proton‐exchange membranes (PEMs), which significantly influences performance and cost. PEMs have a critical role in preventing oxygen crossover, maintaining electrochemical neutrality, supporting microorganisms within MFCs. Nafion, current industry‐standard PEM, grapples with environmental, cost, issues. Although improvements to Nafion been reported using additives, immersion heteropolyacids, different pretreatment methods, UV irradiation, many challenges still remain. Herein, recent developments area alternative are reviewed analyzed. Among them, sulfonated aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly polyether ether ketone, emerged as top contenders terms scale up commercial viability. At same time, based polyvinyl alcohol, ionic liquids, natural materials also being actively researched for various MFC applications. Since most studies short term lab scale, there is need evaluate long‐term stability economic cost standardized parameters such power‐to‐cost normalized energy recovery.
