Neurobiology of Stress, Journal Year: 2016, Volume and Issue: 6, P. 78 - 93

Published: Aug. 26, 2016

Now 30 years old, the chronic mild stress (CMS) model of depression has been used in >1300 published studies, with a year-on-year increase rising to >200 papers 2015. Data from survey users show that while variety names are use (chronic mild/unpredictable/varied stress), these describe essentially same procedure. This paper provides an update on validity and reliability CMS model, reviews recent data neurobiological basis effects mechanisms antidepressant action: volume this research may be unique providing comprehensive account action within single model. Also discussed is drug discovery, particular reference hippocampal extra-hippocampal targets. The high translational potential means described relevance human clinical action.

Exciting nerve cells deep inside the brain Current techniques to stimulate regions need a permanently implanted wire or an optical fiber. Working in mice, Chen et al. developed method overcome this problem (see Perspective by Temel and Jahanshahi). They introduced heat-sensitive capsaicin receptors into then injected magnetic nanoparticles specific regions. The could be heated external alternating fields, which activated ion channel–expressing neurons. Thus, cellular signaling can controlled remotely without permanent implants.
