Global mangrove loss has been attributed primarily to human activity. Anthropogenic hotspots across Southeast Asia and around the world have characterized ecosystem as highly threatened, though natural processes such erosion can also play a significant role in forest vulnerability. However, extent of threats not fully quantified at global scale. Here, using Random Forest-based analysis over one million Landsat images, we present first 30 m resolution maps drivers from 2000 2016, capturing both human-driven stressors. We estimate that 62% losses between 2016 resulted land-use change, through conversion aquaculture agriculture. Up 80% these occurred within six Asian nations, reflecting regional emphasis on enhancing for export support economic development. Both anthropogenic declined slower declines caused an increase their relative contribution total area. attribute decline regionally dependent combination increased conservation efforts lack remaining mangroves viable conversion. Abstract Mangrove forests store high amounts of carbon, protect communities from storms, and support fisheries. Mangroves exist in complex social-ecological systems, hence identifying socioeconomic conditions associated with decreasing losses increasing gains remains challenging albeit important. The impact national governance conservation policies on mangrove at the landscape-scale has not been assessed to date, nor have interactions local economic pressures biophysical drivers. Here, we assess relationship between variables change across coastal geomorphic units worldwide 1996 2016. Mangrove ecosystems provide critical goods and ecosystem services to coastal communities contribute climate change mitigation. Over four decades, remote sensing has proved its usefulness in monitoring mangrove on a broad scale, over time, at lower cost than field observation. Seascape ecology, the marine-centric counterpart to landscape is rapidly emerging as an interdisciplinary and spatially explicit ecological science with relevance marine management, biodiversity conservation, restoration. While important progress in this field has been made past decade, there no coherent prioritisation of key research questions help set future agenda for seascape ecology. We used a 2-stage modified Delphi method solicit applied from academic experts ecology then asked respondents identify priority across 9 interrelated themes using 2 rounds selection. also invited senior management/conservation practitioners prioritise same questions. Analyses highlighted congruence discrepancies perceived priorities research.
