Trends in Chemistry, Journal Year: 2024, Volume and Issue: 6(7), P. 349 - 351

Published: April 29, 2024

Although known for over a century, only now are Zintl clusters being investigated as catalysts. These can serve intermediaries between discrete molecules and bulk solids, allowing them to act atom-precise models whose reactivity may map onto their heterogeneous counterparts. Key contributions in homogeneous catalysis discussed.

Although Zintl ions and phases have been known for more than a century, their application as tools to build organic molecules is underdeveloped. Here, range of were surveyed in the hydrophosphination alkynes, alkenes, imines with diphenylphosphine afford useful organophosphine products. Further investigations absence unsaturated substrates revealed formation diphenylphosphide anion, allowing conclusion that role species an initiator these transformations.

Clusters of the main group elements phosphorus and arsenic, commonly categorized as Zintl clusters, have been known for over a century. And, only now is application these systems catalysts organic synthesis being investigated. In this work, boranes are tethered via an aliphatic linker to Zintl-based clusters their Lewis acidity examined experimentally, by Gutmann–Beckett test competency in hydroborative reduction six substrates, well computationally, fluoride ion affinity hydride methods. The effects tuning length, substituents at boron, changing cluster from seven-atom system arsenic on reactivity studied.

In this work, the reactivity of tetrel-functionalized phosphorus clusters toward organoazides is probed. Clusters (Me3Si)3P7 (1) and (Me3Ge)3P7 (2) were reacted with benzyl azide, phenyl 4-bromophenyl it was found that [RN] (R = benzyl, phenyl, 4-bromophenyl) unit from azide inserted into phosphorus–tetrel bonds on cluster, accompanied by N2 elimination. Through control stoichiometry, mono-, bis-, tris-inserted products could be observed, consistent these insertions proceeding in a stepwise manner. The bonding between amine moieties further investigated computational chemistry, findings cluster having undergone formal oxidation. These insertion reactions are convenient means accessing Zintl functionalized exo-nitrogen-bonded moieties, which, to best our knowledge, previously unknown.

Abstract Although not the only greenhouse gas, CO 2 is poster child. Unsurprisingly, therefore, there global interest across industrial and academic research in its removal subsequent valorisation, including to methanol surrogates. difficult study, heterogenous pnictogens represent one important category of catalytic materials for these conversions; their high crustal abundance low cost offers advantages terms sustainability. Here, Zintl clusters based on elements are studied as homogenous atom-precise models reduction. A family group 13 functionalized pnictogen with general formula [(R E)Pn 7 ] 2– (E = B, Al, In; Pn P, As) synthesized competency reduction probed. Trends both turnover numbers frequencies compared this series, [( i Bu Al)P found be very high-performing recyclable. Electronic structures series using density functional theory provide mechanistic insights.
