The annual generation of coffee waste has overtaken 6 million metric tons, becoming a serious environmental problem. Herein, we report the fabrication bimetallic electrocatalysts synthesized by 1) pyrolyzing spent grounds (SCGs) at 400, 600, 800 and 1000°C, 2) activating as-obtained char with KOH 3) functionalizing activated carbon iron(II) manganese(II) phthalocyanine. final showed high degree amorphousness, defectivity (increasing temperature) specific surface area (up to 1820 m2 g−1). In half-cell compartment (0.1M electrolyte), top-notch material in terms oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity selectivity was CFeMn_600, which same half-wave potential (E1/2) compared Pt/C standard along lower peroxide production. These outstanding results could be attributed area, Fe-Mn synergy, an abundance C-N defects. performance CFeMn_600 as cathode alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFC) open circuit voltage (OCV) 0.890 V power density 30 mW cm−2. Notwithstanding, this research is one few cases where waste-derived electrocatalyst tested real AEMFC, thus pioneer cell study electrode materials.
