Mercury contamination of the environment is extremely hazardous to human health because its significant toxicity, especially in water. Biomass-derived fluorophores such as carbon dots (CDs) have emerged eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative sensors that provide comparable efficacy while mitigating environmental economic drawbacks conventional methods. In this work, we report fabrication a selective fluorescence-enhancing sensor based on sulfur-doped (SCDs) using waste bamboo-derived cellulose sodium thiosulfate soft base dopant, which actively complexes with mercury ions for detection. SCDs an average size 4 nm were synthesized hydrothermally, sulfur doping was confirmed quantitatively atomic percentage 6.5%. Optical studies reveal abnormal fluorescence enhancement SCD presence due aggregation via sulfur-containing functional groups. The fabricated exhibits low detection limit 5.16 nM, suggesting application potential reliable sensor. Real-time analyses carried out tap water samples spiked industry showed high efficiency Hg(II) sensing performance also demonstrated by SCD-coated filter paper strips.
