Animal behaviour is remarkably sensitive to disruption by chemical pollution, with widespread implications for ecological and evolutionary processes in contaminated wildlife populations. However, conventional approaches applied study the impacts of pollutants on seldom address complexity natural environments which contamination occurs. The aim this review guide rapidly developing field behavioural ecotoxicology towards increased environmental realism, complexity, mechanistic understanding. We identify research areas ecology that date have been largely overlooked within but promise yield valuable insights, including within- among-individual variation, social networks collective behaviour, multi-stressor interactions. Further, we feature methodological technological innovations enable collection data pollutant-induced changes at an unprecedented resolution scale laboratory field. In era rapid change, there urgent need advance our understanding real-world pollution behaviour. This therefore provides a roadmap major outstanding questions highlights cross-talk other disciplines order find answers.

The componential view of human emotion recognises that affective states comprise conscious, behavioural, physiological, neural and cognitive elements. Although many animals display bodily behavioural changes consistent with the occurrence similar to those seen in humans, question whether which species these are accompanied by conscious experiences remains controversial. Finding scientifically valid methods for investigating markers subjective component affect both humans is central developing a comparative understanding processes mechanisms its evolution distribution across taxonomic groups, our animal welfare, development models disorders. Antidepressants are one of the most commonly prescribed pharmaceutical classes for treatment psychiatric conditions. They act via modulation brain monoaminergic signaling systems (predominantly serotonergic, adrenergic, dopaminergic) that show a high degree structural conservation across diverse animal phyla. A reasonable assumption, therefore, is exposed fish and other aquatic wildlife may be affected by antidepressants released into natural environment. Indeed, there substantial data reported exposure effects in fish, albeit concentrations exceeding those occurring environments. From critical analysis available evidence risk quotients (RQs) were derived from laboratory-based studies selection detected We conclude likelihood on standard measured end points used assessment (i.e., excluding behavior) low levels Nevertheless, some behavior have been environmentally relevant exposures, can bioaccumulate tissues. Limitations datasets to calculate RQs revealed important gaps which future research should directed more accurately assess risks posed fish. Developing greater certainty surrounding requires attention toward behaviors relating individual fitness, employment realistic levels, chronic scenarios, mixtures analyses, especially given wide range similarly acting compounds

Environmental contamination by pharmaceuticals is global, substantially altering crucial behaviours in animals and impacting on their reproduction survival. A key question whether the consequences of these pollutants extend beyond mean behavioural changes, restraining differences behaviour between individuals. In a controlled, two-year, multigenerational experiment with independent mesocosm populations, we exposed guppies ( Poecilia reticulata ) to environmentally realistic levels ubiquitous pollutant fluoxetine (Prozac). Fish (unexposed: n = 59, low fluoxetine: 57, high 58) were repeatedly assayed four separate occasions for activity risk-taking behaviour. Fluoxetine homogenized individuals' activity, individual variation populations even concentrations falling less than half that unexposed populations. To understand proximate mechanism underlying tested relative contribution within individuals overall decline variation. We found strong evidence erodes but not individuals, revealing hidden contaminant phenotypic fish—likely impair adaptive potential environmental change.
