Abstract Context China’s high-speed economic development was accompanied by rapid urbanization for forty years, guided a series of changing policies enacted the central government. However, did China become more sustainable both economically and environmentally? Or specifically, it operate within or towards safe just space (SJS)? Although numerous relevant studies exist, these questions have not been adequately addressed, multi-scale landscape perspective is needed. Objectives The main objective this study to examine trends, associated institutional changes, their impacts on nation’s sustainability trajectory during past four decades. Specifically, we intended analyze related spatial patterns, temporal shortfalls, complex nexus different dimensions SJS across scales in China. Methods We apply framework, which integrates eight environmental ceilings seven social justice foundations, urbanization, socioeconomic dynamics, as well at multiple scales. Segmented regression correlation analysis were used relationship with governance Results Since implementation Western Development Plan, has faced increasing challenges overshoots CO 2 emissions, phosphorus nitrogen loading, ecological footprint, material footprint per capita basis. our showed that, 2015, met nearly all basic needs. pattern geospatial gradients (except footprint), multi-footprints, from eastern central, northeastern, western regions, developed developing provinces. tradeoffs between justice, safety, regional equality remain pronounced heterogeneous landscapes levels urbanization. region’s expanded enormously, but mainly consumption region Conclusions decades characterized enormous growth, much improved living standards, highly fragmented landscapes, problems. To promote sustainability, should continue implement strategy high-quality civilization. Regional landscape-based approaches are needed explicitly recognize heterogeneity disparities, better understand urbanization-governance-landscape promoting safer

Tropical deforestation continues at alarming rates with profound impacts on ecosystems, climate, and livelihoods, prompting renewed commitments to halt its continuation. Although it is well established that agriculture a dominant driver of deforestation, mechanisms remain disputed often lack clear evidence base. We synthesize the best available pantropical provide clarity how drives deforestation. most (90 99%) across tropics 2011 2015 was driven by agriculture, only 45 65% deforested land became productive within few years. Therefore, ending likely requires combining measures create deforestation-free supply chains landscape governance interventions. highlight key remaining gaps including trends, commodity-specific land-use dynamics, data from tropical dry forests Africa.

Digital agriculture involving different tools and management practices has advanced considerably in recent years, intending to overcome climate risk reduce food insecurity. Climate change its impacts on agricultural production security are significant sources of public concern worldwide. The objective this study was provide an overview the potential impact digital technologies that can greenhouse gas emissions enhance productivity while ensuring security. Based a comprehensive survey previously published works, it found due global warming, altered precipitation patterns, increase frequency extreme events, negatively impacted by reducing yields, slowing animal growth rates, decreasing livestock productivity. reviewed works also suggest using technology is necessary mitigate effect In addition, issues regarding creating sustainable systems, minimizing environmental pollution, increasing providing fair equitable distribution, malnutrition leading were discussed detail. It shown crucial role mitigating security, requires concerted effort from policymakers, researchers, farmers ensure benefits digitalization realized manner.

Ecosystem restoration is an important means to address global sustainability challenges. However, scientific and policy discourse often overlooks the social processes that influence equity effectiveness of interventions. In present article, we outline how are critical can be better incorporated in science policy. Drawing from existing case studies, show projects align with local people's preferences implemented through inclusive governance more likely lead improved social, ecological, environmental outcomes. To underscore importance considerations restoration, overlay priority maps, population, Human Development Index (HDI) approximately 1.4 billion people, disproportionately belonging groups low HDI, live areas identified by previous studies as being high priority. We conclude five action points for promote equity-centered restoration.

Despite the looming land scarcity for agriculture, cropland abandonment is widespread globally. Abandoned can be reused to support food security and climate change mitigation. Here, we investigate potentials trade-offs of using global abandoned recultivation restoring forests by natural regrowth, with spatially-explicit modelling scenario analysis. We identify 101 Mha between 1992 2020, a capability concurrently delivering 29 363 Peta-calories yr
