Antibiotic resistance patterns of the major human periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis were assessed over a 20-year period in United States. Subgingival P. was cultured pre-treatment from 2193 severe periodontitis patients during three time periods: 1999-2000 (936 patients), 2009-2010 (685 and 2019-2020 (572 patients). The clinical isolates tested for vitro to 4 mg/L clindamycin doxycycline, 8 amoxicillin, 16 metronidazole, with post hoc combination data metronidazole plus amoxicillin. Clindamycin-resistant significantly more prevalent (9.1% patients) (9.3%; 15-fold increase) as compared (0.6%). amoxicillin also increased 0.1% 1.3% 2.8% (28-fold 2019-2020. doxycycline low (≤0.5% prevalence), statistically unchanged, period. These findings are first reveal marked increases 20 years clindamycin-resistant amoxicillin-resistant States patients. Increased antibiotic other periodontitis-associated bacteria threatens efficacy antimicrobial chemotherapy.

Nonantibiotic pharmaceuticals are widely used to treat various human diseases and can also be ubiquitously detected as emerging contaminants in the environment, thus coexisting with environmental bacteria. Previous studies have shown that several nonantibiotic trigger mutation promote horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes between However, it is still unclear whether an antibiotic-like antimicrobial activity against In this study, we investigated effects four typical (gemfibrozil, ibuprofen, propranolol, sertraline) bacteria evolution bacterial when challenged these pharmaceuticals. Surprisingly, all exhibit antibacterial through a mechanism similar antibiotics. They increase reactive oxygen species production enhance membrane permeability up 2.7- 2.4-fold, respectively. The expressions sodA, sodB, recA related detoxification SOS response were upregulated. We found upregulate expression efflux pump gene tolC 2.5-fold resistance. Abstract The gut microbiota modulates neurobiological activity in various animal lineages. This is often proposed to occur through interactions with neurotransmitters and other neuromodulatory molecules the host. Our commentary will discuss recent research that establishes microbiota–neurotransmitter connections, gaps current understanding, outstanding questions may guide future advances field of microbiota–nervous system interactions.

Current treatments for chronic diarrhea have limited efficacy and several side effects. Probiotics the potential to alleviate symptoms of diarrhea. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluates effects administering probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum P9 (P9) strain in young adults with (Clinical Trial Registration Number: ChiCTR2000038410). The intervention period lasts 28 days, followed by a 14-day post-intervention period. Participants are randomized into (n = 93) placebo 96) groups, 170 individuals completing double-blind phase 85 per group). primary endpoint is symptom severity score. Both intention-to-treat 189) per-protocol 170) analyses reveal modest yet statistically significant reduction compared group (20.0%, P 0.050; 21.4%, 0.048, respectively). In conclusion, results this study support use probiotics managing adults. However, lack blood parameter assessment short represent limitations study.
